Mens Lives Series Event - "Gendering the Caribbean Picturesque

Join the men's center in welcoming Patricia Mohammed, a leading Caribbean scholar and gender studies professor from the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus, Trinidad & Tobago.  Ms. Mohammed will present "Gendering the Caribbean Picturesque" on Thursday, October 25, 2007, 7:00 p.m. in the Alumni Lounge, SJU. 

"Gendering the Caribbean Picturesque" deals with gender, race, class the questions of identity formation, or alternative, based on her new film, entitled, The Sign of the Loa.  Ms. Mohammed will do an introduction to the film via the project of writing and research which interfaces with the book Imaging the Caribbean. This deals with the question of art and religious symbolism but is equally tied in with the issues of identity and race rather than gender is the point of entry and of course the meaning of aestetics.  The Sign of the Loa is material related to her presentation.  CSB/SJU students, faculty and staff and the public are invited to this free event.

Ms. Mohammed will is available for classroom visits on Friday, October 26th, at 9:40 a.m.     Discussions will continue at 1:00 p.m. to plan an international masculinity conference in 2009.  Please contact Tonya Miller tmiller@csbsju.edu if you are interested in these opportunities.  

Ms. Mohammed is currently teaching at University at Albany as part of a one-year partnership between the Universtiy at Albany and the University of the West Indies.
