Conference on the College Male

Best Practices for Involving College Men
February 13-14, 2009

Research has confirmed that college men are often less engaged in campus life than college women.  This conference will focus on best practices for increasing male volunteering, vocational discernment and other experiential learning activities.  A core group of schools has been pursuing pilot projects to address this issue and will present their findings.  (Other submissions are welcome as usual.)

Conference Highlights:

  • Preconference sessions:
      • Linda Sax, UCLA and author of The Gender Gap in College:  Maximizing the Developmental Potiential of Women and Men
      • Harry Brod, University of Northern Iowa, on Teaching Men's Studies.  

  • Keynote Speakers:  Larry Daloz, Whidbey Institute; Edward Klein, University of Cincinnati

  • Dinner with award presentation to Harry Brod for his years of leadership in men's issues

  • Presentations of pilot projects by 15 colleges and universities:  Augustana, Duke, Davidson, Georgetown, Gustavus Adolphus, Hastings, Hope, Luther, Morehouse, Siena, Saint John's, Saint Norbert's, University of Portland, Wabash and Wagner.

  • Best Practices for enhancing involvement of high school youth 

  • Annual Father/Son Luncheon

  • Performance by the SJU Men's Choir

  • Genuine Men:  Journies in Stories and Stills photo exhibit by Nancy Bruno
