Once you have your computer equipped with the "RealOne Player" software you will need to have Internet access. A computer connected to the Internet with at least a 56K dial-up modem is the minimum bandwidth requirement. However, if you're connected to the Internet through a LAN, DSL, or have a high-speed cable modem connection, you'll have the advantage of better quality picture. The video stream provided will be encoded at a bandwidth to accommodate the needs of the end user. The RealOne Player software will automatically determine the highest bandwidth available at the receiving end. The total number of end users we can accommodate is limited by the total amount of outgoing bandwidth we have available at CSB/SJU. The total bandwidth of all the end user video streams can not exceed the CSB/SJU outgoing bandwidth. For example: If we send out a video stream encoded at 150Kbps we can accommodate up to 90 end users.
Live video streaming over the Internet isn't like watching TV or viewing videotape. The quality of images and sound depend greatly on the quality of the Internet connection between our sending server and your receiving computer. Typically at lower bandwidths the video will be choppy and may even "freeze" from time to time. Since Internet connectivity is always changing, even at higher bandwidths the video may "freeze" or pixelize. Usually the audio quality is quite consistent but if the Internet path gets bogged down it too could stop intermittently. If a connection is really bad it might help to stop the video stream and try again to access the video link from scratch.
