Politics and a Pint: Newspapers, Internet, and the Future of Democracy

Where: Brother Willie’s Pub, SJU
When: 10/28/2009 4:30 PM - 5:30 PM
Modern democracy was born along with mass-circulation newspapers. Public deliberation requires a public, and newspapers created an informed and politically-active public. But today newspapers face a difficult future, as advertising migrates to the Internet, news organizations cut staff and resources, and younger voters free-ride the web. Can newspapers (in paper or online form) still fulfill their public role in a democracy? Are there alternatives to newspapers that can fulfill that same role? Join us as we look into the future of newspapers, the internet, and democracy.

Panelists:
James Read, Department of Political Science, CSB/SJU
Kathleen Hansen, School of Journalism and Mass Communication, University of Minnesota
Katie Johnson, Communication Department, CSB/SJU
Nick Coleman, Senior Fellow, McCarthy Center for Public Policy, and award-winning columnist for the Minneapolis Star-Tribune

Student Conference on United States Affairs

Where: Off-Campus
When: 11/4/2009 8:00 AM
Student Conference on United States Affairs
November 4-7, 2009
United States Military Academy, West Point
The theme for 2009 is:
“SCUSA 61: Advancing as a Global Community Amidst Scarcity and Instability.”

This conference is designed to provide a premiere educational experience for student delegates offering the opportunity to interact both individually and in group settings with foreign policy experts and to learn from each other. The goal is that when delegates depart West Point, they do so with a greater understanding of the complexities surrounding foreign policy development. In addition, the conference provides an outstanding forum for the development of networking relations that will prove to be valuable resources for participants for many years to come. Last year, SCUSA 60 involved 251 students from 125 schools throughout the United States and Canada and 49 international delegates representing 25 countries. Additionally, 52 United States Military Academy cadets participated as delegates and approximately 100 cadets assisted in organization, logistics and administration of the conference.

Congratulations to Valentin Sierra and Nicole Hochsprung for being delegates from CSB/SJU to the 2009 Student Conference on United States Affairs

Log Cabin Republican Panel

Where: Alumni Lounge, SJU; Quad
When: 11/11/2009 7:15 PM
The McCarthy Center and the CSB/SJU Prism club are cosponsoring a conversation with a member from the Log Cabin Republicans about what Log Cabin Republicans are, how they reconcile their beliefs with being conservative, and about what they have done as an organization.

Log Cabin Republican Panel

Where: Alumni Lounge, SJU
When: 11/11/2009 7:15 PM - 8:15 PM
The Log Cabin Republicans of Minnesota are a dedicated group of conservative Republicans who realize that having a small government and personal freedom means allowing GLBT people to live their own lives. From within the GOP LCR's have worked to bring about GLBT equality demonstrated by having the only pending lawsuit against Don't Ask, Don't Tell. LCR's dispel the widely held sterotype that just because you are GLBT or an Ally you have to be a Democrat. Membership of this group is on the rise.

Red Mass

Where: Sacred Heart Chapel, CSB
When: 11/14/2009 5:00 PM
For the past eight years, a “Red Mass” has occurred at the College of St. Benedict. The McCarthy Center for Public Policy and Civic Engagement partners with the CSB Alumnae Office in offering students an opportunity to participate in the mass.
The judicial year in many jurisdictions around the world is traditionally opened with a Red Mass.
The celebration of the Mass is designed to provide judges, lawyers, civic leaders and academics of all faiths the opportunity to reflect on the powers and responsibilities that are part of their offices.
The Red Mass name comes from the red vestments and garments that early legal participants wore on this occasion.
Trial attorney Susan Holden will be honored with this year's Fidelis Apparitor Award.
