LLAS and the Chile and Guatemala Programs

The semester-long study abroad programs in Chile (fall) and Guatemala (spring) are both organically connected to the Latino/Latin American Studies minor. This is true in the obvious sense that they're located in Latin America, but also in terms of curriculum.

Students traveling to Guatemala or Chile are good candidates for the LLAS minor.

  • Students traveling to Chile can complete 3 or 4 of the 6 courses required for the minor, including non-HISP credits.
  • Students traveling to Guatemala with a minimum of 311 can complete 3 courses required for the minor, including non-HISP credits.
  • Students traveling to Guatemala having completed 211 or 212 can accelerate toward advanced coursework in Spanish, and can complete 2 non-HISP courses applicable to the LLAS minor.

Here are the details:

1) Requirements for the LLAS minor: (24 credits + 1 credit LLAS 399)

  • completion of HISP 312 (pre-requisite for advanced HISP courses)

    4 "core" courses:

2 "elective" courses on Latino or Latin Amercan topics.
  • no more than 12 credits (3 courses) can be HISP courses.
(in other words, at least 3 courses must be non-HISP)

(including HISP 357 if student already has POLS 347)
  • There are 2 courses that may substitute for "core" LLAS requirements when necessary:
ART 309 may be substituted for HISP 336
POLS 357 may be substituted for POLS 347 requirement.

3) In Guatemala:

  • Students may enroll in the program with only SPAN 211. The intensive language program is an excellent way of accelerating in one semester toward advanced coursework in Hispanic Studies.
