Larry’s Island

Tim Markoe

This story begins with a couple friends that during the summer wanted to get away from the daily life of work, drama, and summer classes.  They wanted to go to a cabin so they could hang out and go out on the lake like every college student loves to do in the summer.  So they planned a weekend that worked for them all and they were really looking forward to it.  As the days went by, they counted down the hours and eventually the time had come.  "Ahhh, time to see my favorite monkey" said Nick.  One of their friends, Trevor, had the nickname "Monkey".  Trevor is from Texas so all of his friends didn't get to really see him during the summer, but Trevor had some news to tell them when he met the boys at the cabin.  He recently started dating a model for one of the most popular clothing line in the United States.  To begin with Trevor was a ladies man, with his southern accent and great physic the ladies would flock to him when he would walk around campus, but his new girlfriend was absolutely stunning. When she walked in the room everyone's head would turn just to catch a glimpse of her.  Trevor and his girlfriend, Tara, were very happy together and were going to be one of the most popular couples around campus.  "I can't wait to tell the boys the good news!" said Trevor, as he was boarding the plane to Minnesota.

While Trevor was getting on the plane, the rest of the boys were getting together and packing for the best weekend of the summer.  "I have more room in my car" said Seth.  As they stuffed the last of the things they needed for the weekend in the car.  Once the cars were packed with the boys and stuff for the cabin they started on their way.  There was so much excitement in both cars from the boys and they hardly could wait to get to the cabin for a weekend of fun, rest and relaxation. "Hey turn this up, this is my jam" said Jack. While in the car as they were driving and they could see the Cities in the rear view mirror.  "This is exactly what I needed, a weekend away from summer classes and internships and a weekend with the boys" said Dylan as he smiled and put his arms around Nick and Jack.  Dylan was very bright and witty.  He loved to joke around with the boys and stir things up. He was also a ladies man like Trevor, but being the witty man he was, he had a secret plan to bring some girls up to the cabin without the boys knowing.  After a couple hours of driving they finally made it to their destination.  They slowly rolled from nice pavement to a dirt road driveway and they saw where they were staying for the weekend.  It was a good-size cabin, two floors with plenty of windows to see the nature around them.  The cabin was made out of rich cedar wood, and the inside was newly furnished. "This is going to be legit!" said Nick as he walked through to check the rest of the cabin.  Nick had a girl

friend and was a very energetic person who loved to have a good time.  "I call this bedroom!" said Tim, as they started bringing in all of the stuff they had in the cars.

Once everything was unpacked they started to settle in and wait for their friend Trevor, also known as monkey.  They all sat around with a drink in their hand just talking about how they thought the weekend would go.  While they shared laughs and talked about past memories that they shared, they noticed a car rolling down the dirt road driveway.  It wasn't a cab either so they had no idea who it was. The big SUV parked in the driveway and out come a group of girls. "Dude, who invited these girls?" asked Jack.  They couldn't recognize who the girls were until they came closer to the cabin.  Once they were close enough, one of the boys realized who they were.  "It's Megan and some of her friends!" Nick said.  "Now it's a party" said Seth.  So they talked to the girls and the found out that Dylan actually invited them to come to the cabin as well.  As everyone caught up and talked about their summer and enjoyed each other's company, another car rolled down the dirt road driveway.  "This has to be Monkey" Jack said.  Sure enough as the taxi rolled up and Trevor hoped out in an instant all of the boys jump up and ran outside to see him.  "Hey boys!" Monkey said.  After they brought all of Trevor's stuff in, everyone started to catch up and have a good time.

Once dinner was done everyone went outside to sit around the bonfire and catch up.  "This would be a good time to tell everyone about my girlfriend" Monkey thought to himself.  Right as he was going to say something they all heard a gun shot.  "What was that? Megan said, they heard another one and everyone started to question it.  "Let's just go inside to be safe" said Tim.  They all hurried inside and locked each door and closed every window.  "Ok just relax everyone, were up north and it probably was just a hunter, it's fine" said Nick.  They all sat around for a couple more hours worried and questioning what happened.  Eventually they all went to sleep, during the night when everyone was sound asleep Jack and Seth heard footsteps out on the dock.  They slowly and quietly looked out the window to see if they could see anyone but there was no one there but the dock seemed to have something on it. They thought they were dreaming so they went back to sleep.ut come a group of girls.

The next morning everyone slowly awoke form their slumber and walked downstairs to have breakfast.  They all sat down and started to eat and couple of the girls and guys started to cook.  "Dude, did anyone have a crazy dream last night?" said Jack.  "Yeah I did, I thought I heard someone walking on the dock last night" said Seth.  They both looked at each other and noticed that their dreams were exactly the same and started to get scared.  "Well there's only one way to see if it was true" said Seth.  So a couple of the boys walked out to the dock and noticed something very strange.  There was a pile of rocks shape in an arrow pointing to a small island that they didn't notice when they first got to the cabin.  "What the..." said Nick, as everyone was startled when they looked at the island.  "Why is there an arrow pointing at that island?" said Jack.  "There's only one way to find out" said Tim.

The cabin they stayed at had a small fishing boat, so a couple of the boys decided to get on the boat and sped over to the small island.
They stopped at a sand bar and walked onto the island cautiously. Following a little dirt path, they noticed a smaller log cabin.  "Dude, I'm not going in there." Said Connor. The boys decided that Connor would be the lookout and the rest would go in and knock on the door of the log cabin. "You're knocking on the door, Tim" said Nick, as they got closer.  "Come on are you serious?" said Tim.  "Fine" he refrained.  As Tim walked up the stairs slowly, the other boys stood on the stairs in anticipation of what could happen. Tim knocked on the door and looked back at the boys quick before the door opened slowly.  "Hello?" Tim said, an older man walked out and looked at the boys and said,  "How are you fellas doing?"  "Good, we were just wondering if you were the person that put the pile of rocks on the dock pointing us toward the island?" said Tim respectfully.  The old man told them to sit on the steps and they did hesitantly and he began to tell about how he has been living alone in the log cabin for over 10 years now. His wife and daughter died in a car accident when he was working on this log cabin.  "I actually built that cabin you and your friends are staying in" he told the boys.  "It's really nice" Connor said.  He continued to tell the boys about how he lived in the cabin they were staying in and the good times he had with his wife and daughter, also that he was building this log cabin for his daughter for when she gets older.  The boys became more comfortable with the man and asked him some questions.  "So why did you put those rocks on our dock when you could have come by in the morning?" said Nick.  "Well I love to night fish, it's the only time I can be in peace and reflect about my life" the old man answered.  Going on he explained that he left the rocks because he has become very anti-social and shy because of what has happened to him through his life, and he just wanted to talk to them.  He always tries to talk the people who stay in his old cabin and explained that the shots they heard last night were actually the engine of his pontoon as he was trying to fire it up so he could go fishing.  The boys also found out that the old man served in the Vietnam War.  "We appreciate everything that you have done for us, sir" said Trevor.  The old man told the boys as they started to leave "If you guys need anything just let me know."  "Will do!" they hollered as they were walking back to the fishing boat.

The got back to the cabin and as they were getting onto the dock and walking back to the cabin, the rest of the group scrambled out and ran to them "Are you guys ok?!" one of the girls yelled.  "Yeah were fine" Nick said while laughing.  They informed the rest of the people at the cabin about the old man and how he is a good guy and wouldn't bring any harm to them.  Saturday afternoon came around and they were making lunch and the main topic of discussion was the old man.  "We never found out what his name was" said Tim, as the all looked at each other and lightly laughed.  "Maybe we should have him over for dinner" said Nick.  Everyone thought it would be nice to have him over for dinner because he seems like he hasn't socialized with a group of people for a long time.  So a couple of the boys went off to the island and talked to the old man about how they wanted to invite him for dinner.

The time came and everyone was setting the table and hanging out getting ready for dinner.  The boys were wondering if the old man was actually going to show up.  At that moment they saw a pontoon slowly floating over to their cabin.  He started walking on the dock, "Hope you like steak and Budlight!" said Jack.  The old man smiled, as he got closer.  They all sat down and said grace, one of the boys asked the old man what his name was and he said "Larry".  Eventually he started to open up to everyone at the dinner table telling stories of the war and about his family.  Everyone loved Larry, he was a true and genuine guy.  As everyone was laughing at Larry's stories, a taxi rolled down the dirt road hill and everyone started to question who it was.  Trevor smiled and started walking to the taxi.  Out came his beautiful girlfriend Tara.  Trevor paid for the taxi ride and they both walked to the group. "Guys I want you to meet my girlfriend, Tara" Trevor said with a big smile on his face.  All of the boys started to clap their hands and congratulate Trevor.  Trevor went inside to get her a plate of food and she sat down, while everyone was still staring at her.  "Hey guys" Tara said shyly.  "I've seen you somewhere before" said Seth.  "Yeah aren't you a model for Hollister?" said Tim.  As she confirmed that she was, all of the boys ran to Monkey to congratulate him.

As the night went on and everyone relaxed and talked about his or her summer, the old man told everyone that he was heading out.  "You can stay if you want, Larry" said Nick.  "Nah, that's alright I'm getting old, it's past my bed time." Larry told them.  Larry said his goodbyes to everyone and waved as he got onto his pontoon.  The night continued and they all sat around the campfire.  They were very happy to see one another and were very thankful for what they had and were sad that they were leaving in the morning.  They talked about how they all have a pretty good life, talking about how they feel bad for Larry.  The all started falling asleep around the campfire, slowly one by one they all went inside and fell asleep.

The next morning was full of mixed emotions, they were sad to leave.  A couple of the boys wanted to go over to the cabin and thank Larry for letting everyone spend time in the cabin he built.  They went over the to island and talked to Larry and said goodbye.  Larry handed them an envelope and told them to not open it until they were almost home.  They headed back to the cabin and packed everything up.  They all said their good byes to each other and looked around so they would remember the cabin and the good times they had.  As they started to drive they wanted to open the envelope up, "Dude, he told us to wait" said Jack, so they drove a little farther and then they couldn't resist.  Nick opened the envelope and inside was a note that said, "Hey boys, you are a good group of kids and it was fun spending time with you.  I appreciate you bringing me out of my comfort zone and making dinner for me.  It was very good, you were one of the three groups that stayed at the cabin all summer.  The other two groups never came and talked to me but you did.  Here is something for you guys and your friends."  They pulled out the lease for the cabin and the records showing that it was all paid for.  "No way!" Tim said  There was more to the note as Nick read it out loud.  "I want you boys to know how happy you made me and to always appreciate life not matter how hard it is and I hope to see you boys next summer.  The Budlights will be on me next time."  They all were very excited and couldn't believe what just happened.

As the year began they were at school together and every once in a while they talked about Larry and how they are excited to go to the cabin.  The time finally came and since they owned the cabin they could go there anytime they wanted.  The very first weekend of summer they all headed to the cabin.  They drove down the dirt road hill and parked the car, and started to unpack.  One of the neighbors walked over and wanted to talk to them.  He had some terrible news, he informed them.  Larry had passed away during the winter.  Everyone's heart sank, they were very sadden by the news.  The neighbor also told him that he was asked to be buried on the island and that he had a grave there.

They took the small fishing boat out to the island, this time very slowly and with much different emotions then the last time.  They looked around when floating over to the island and noticed the water was clearer then usual and the sky seemed a lot bluer.  It was beautiful, as they landed on the sand bar. They all walked to the log cabin and saw the grave.  Engraved in a stone was Larry's name, when he was born, and when he died.  It stated "A war hero, a caring husband and loving farther".  They boys were filled with sadness.  They each said a prayer for Larry quietly and placed a six pack of Bud light next to his grave.  They walked back to the fishing boat and got back to the cabin.

To this day, the boys still spend one weekend at the cabin together. During the other weekends each one of the boys bring their families to the cabin and tell the story of their friend Larry and how important life is.
