Women's Month

Women's Month is a series of events that celebrate Women's Rights, Issues, History, etc. This is an annual event, taking place in March. Women's Month is made possible through the collaboration of the Institute for Women's Leadership and the Saint Ben's Senate.

Honoring the Past, Creating the Future

The Institute for Women's Leadership is proud to announce the theme of Women's Month in March 2010: Honoring the Past, Creating the Future. Throughout the month of March, we will look at women and leadership from a historical standpoint and bring that knowledge with us to create the future. CSB women will be empowered to act as shapers of our world by attending speakers, engaging in discussion, participating in outdoor activities, and watching inspiring films. Jessica Valenti, women's rights activist and author, is the keynote speaker for the month. We invite you to join us in celebrating Women's Month 2010 - here are a few events we have planned:

Natural Beauty Day Shirts - Wednesday, March 10th

Confident women have made their mark on history, and we know you can do the same. This "make-up free" day has never intimidated CSB women before, and we are excited to showcase Bennies' Natural Beauty once again this year. Look for emails to get your free shirt, and celebrate your leadership and your natural beauty!

Lead Confidently: The Influence of Body Image on Effective Leadership -  Wednesday, March 10th from 7:00-8:00 pm in Gorecki 204B

From corsets to piercings, growing up in a female body is more difficult today than it has ever been in the past.   As society has changed so rapidly throughout the years, so too has our view of our own bodies and selves.  During the nineteenth century, at the height of value based groups like Girl Scouts, women were supported as the whole person, emphasizing internal qualities over external appearance.  But, as popular culture has prevailed, young women growing up today are consistently told that “good looks” are more valuable than “good works.”  If young girls grow up to value external appearance, how will strong leadership skills ever be developed?  Join us for an engaging discussion about how growing up as a girl has changed over the past one hundred years and what young women can do to develop a positive self image that emphasizes inner strength and leadership.

Women on the Wall -  Wednesday, March 10th from 8:00-10:00 pm at the SJU Palestra Climbing Wall

Stretch your body and push your limits!  Women on the Wall is a special event to promote women's outdoor leadership.  Come to the rock wall at SJU and learn how to rock climb or advance your skills.  There will be leadership games, food, and prizes.

Snowshoeing Trek through the CSB Woods -  Saturday, March 13th at 10:30 am in the CSB Woods

Get out and be active and get to know the St. Ben's woods and Lake Sarah! The Institute for Women's Leadership is sponsoring a snowshoeing trek to get you up and moving and show you some of the most beautiful scenery on our campuses.  We will talk about women's place in nature and how being active outside can enhance leadership skills in all facets of life. Participants will meet in the Institute for Women’s Leadership at 10:30am.

Film Showing: Iron Ladies of Liberia - Thursday, March 18th from 7:00-8:00 pm in Gorecki 120

Women have the power to make a global influence and lead through diversity.  Concrete examples give women everywhere the courage to realize societal struggles and take a stand.  Iron Ladies of Liberia tells the story of Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf who, on January 16, 2006, was the first freely elected female head of state in Africa.  After surviving a 14-year civil war and a struggling corrupt government, Sirleaf is ready to bring change to Liberia.  To lift her country from devastation, Sirleaf relies on an extraordinary team of women, appointing them to positions such as police chief, finance minister, minister of justice, commerce minister, and minister of gender.   Experience the power and determination these women show as they work together to save their people from destruction.  No matter what’s happening in our world today, all women have the power to make a difference.  Prepare to be inspired by these remarkable women and their passion to change the world!

Do What You Love: Women in Male-Dominated Fields - Monday, March 22nd from 7:00-8:30 pm in Alumnae Hall, HCC

Did you know only 5% of senior managers in mid to large sized business firms are women?  Its time young women start believing they can do anything, no matter what society tells them.  Although it is obvious some careers are predominately male, that does not mean women are incapable of working these same jobs.  Hear the untold stories of women going beyond expectations and succeeding in a workforce dominated by men.  These women, both seasoned executives and new entrants to the workforce, will inspire you to follow your dreams, no matter where they take you.  Reception to follow.

Events and Programs are planned throughout the academic year. If you would like to volunteer for a project or be involved in any Women's Month events, please contact the Program Coordinators, Rachel Peterson and Sarah Mikkelson at iwl@csbsju.edu.
