Preparing Your Computer Prior to Arriving on Campus

Read and follow the instructions below prior to your arrival on campus to prepare your computer for connection to the campus network:

Windows Users

Install Windows Updates

  • Go to http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate.
  • Follow the instructions provided to install the Microsoft Update software if it is not already installed, check for updates and install all available critical updates for Windows.

Use Up-to-Date Anti-virus Software

Note: Students are required to run anti-virus software on Windows and Macintosh systems. To make it easy for students to be virus free, IT Services provides a Symantec AntiVirus software license for every student on campus. Please note: You will not be able to download this software until your computer is connected to the CSB/SJU campus network. However, your computer should be virus-free before you bring it to campus.

To scan for and remove existing viruses, take the following steps:

Macintosh Users

Install Macintosh Updates

  • From the Apple menu, click Software Update.
  • Follow the instructions provided to check for updates and install all available critical updates for your Mac.

Use Up-to-Date Anti-virus Software

Network connections, available in all residence hall rooms, provide Ethernet connectivity to the Internet and network resources for student-owned PCs and Macs, free of charge, 24 hours-a-day.

A "Get Connected" guide with instructions for connecting to the campus network, Ethernet cables and Office 2007 software, for approximately $10, will be available on move-in day in August for students.
