Top 10 Questions from New Students

1. Do I need to bring a computer to campus?

Students who do not have a personal computer in their room will usually have close access to a computer in a computer cluster in their residence hall, which are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Each computer cluster has a LaserJet printer located in it as well.

In addition, Computer Access Areas are open and accessible when students need them. The Quad Computer Center located at SJU and the Clemens Computing Center located at CSB are open until 2:00am on most days. Each lab has two LaserJet printers for students to use.

2. How do I get my username, password and e-mail account?

Students will receive their username, password and e-mail account information in the Student Housing packet that will be mailed during the summer. Look for the neon green sheet. Typically, a student’s username will be her or his first initial, middle initial and last name (e.g. John William Doe’s username would be jwdoe). A student’s e-mail address is username@csbsju.edu (e.g. jwdoe@csbsju.edu).

3. If I bring a computer to campus, what are the minimum requirements?

See Requirements for Student Owned Computers Connecting to the CSB/SJU Network.

4. Should I bring a desktop or notebook computer?

Students may bring either type of computer to campus. Below are some things to consider when deciding between a desktop and notebook:

5. Is wireless Internet access available on campus?

CSB/SJU has wireless access zones in every building on both campuses. Wireless is available in the residence hall lounges only. CSB/SJU uses the IEEE 802.11b/g wireless network standard to allow users to connect to the network from wireless access zones on campus. See Wireless Access at CSB/SJU for more information.

6. Does CSB/SJU require or provide anti-virus software?

To make it easy for students to be virus-free, IT Services provides a free Symantec AntiVirus software license for every student on campus.  Using this software will ensure the best possible virus protection since virus definitions and updates to the software are done automatically by IT Services. Students with a Windows operating system are required to run AntiVirus software.

7. What services does IT provide for students?

IT Services provides technical support to students. We will assist students with connecting to the campus network, obtaining a network/e-mail account and password and providing support for their computing needs.

8. Will I have Internet access? Is there a charge?

Network connections, which are available in all residence hall rooms, provide Ethernet connectivity for student-owned PCs and Macs, free of charge, 24 hours-a-day.

9. What if I have trouble with my network connection?

A connection assistance room will be open on each campus throughout the academic year. Students requiring connection assistance can drop off their CPU at a Connection Assistance Room on either campus.

Each student can purchase:
