2. Working with Hispanic students in the ESL program – ON-GOING
Description: This is a great opportunity for students with a Spanish major or minor who enjoy working with children, who are interested in working with Spanish speaking ESL students in or out of class, to help with subjects in which they struggle, particularly language and reading. Applications accepted from all majors. This internship is for academic credit. The hours per week equal six or more.
Responsibilities: The intern will research and provide appropriate books, educational games, and activities for students. Opportunities for translating school communications to parents may also be available.

The Brain Injury Association of Minnesota – Minneapolis, MN ON-GOING
Multi- Cultural Outreach Intern
Description: Under the guidance of the Latino Outreach and Multi-Cultural Outreach Coordinators, the intern performs a variety of activities to help create a better future through brain injury prevention, research, education and advocacy. This is an unpaid internship.
Responsibilities: The intern will develop informational materials for various underserved communities and attend health fairs and meetings. He/she will also help the Outreach Coordinators prepare for outreach activities and follow up with new contacts from diverse communities.
Requirements: Position is open to sophomores, juniors or seniors who have completed some coursework in sociology, public health, social work or a related field. Requires organized, good communicator who is able to adapt to changing needs and demands. Must be comfortable working with diverse communities. Interest in brain injury a plus. Children’s HeartLink – Edina, MN ON-GOING
Description: Children’s HeartLink is an international medical charity, based in Edina, MN. Children’s Heartlink has been mobilizing individuals to treat and prevent heart disease in needy children for over 35 years. They currently have partner hospital programs in Malaysia, India, China, Ukraine and Kenya, as well as efforts in South Africa.
Responsibilities: Providing assistance to all Children’s HeartLink international program activities, including travel preparations, staff communications, updating patient and supply databases, filing, attending meetings, assisting with special events, potential translation work.
Requirements: Interest in working with international charity or nonprofit organization. A commitment to intern for a full semester at Children’s HeartLink international headquarters in Edina, MN, and the ability to commit to a minimum of 14 hours services a week, experience in Microsoft Suite applications, strong writing/communication and proofreading skills

Common Hope – St. Paul, MN ON-GOING
Common Hope (formerly The Godchild Project) is a nonprofit organization serving impoverished children and families living in the highlands of Guatemala. Godchild is a child sponsorship program where over 1,600 sponsored children and their families receive assistance in the areas of health care, education, housing, and other human development programs. Common Hope is looking for individuals who have a personal desire to serve those less advantaged, an interest in learning how a small nonprofit works "from the inside," and good written and oral communication skills. Common Hope’s needs for assistance are ever changing. Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) – Washington, D.C. ON-GOING
The CHCI is a non-profit and non-partisan educational organization OFFERING educational and leadership development programs, services, and activities that promote the growth of its participants as effective professionals and strong leaders. The organization is currently offering summer internships for 30 undergraduates from across the county. The intern will spend two months in Washington, D.C. working for a member of congress and getting a “behind the scenes” look at how the U.S. government functions. Instituto De Espanol - San Jose, Costa Rica ON-GOING
The Instituto De Espanol in Costa Rica is offering a position in the area of marketing and languages in Costa Rica. Description: La Cruz is a 104-unit housing complex managed by Catholic Charities that offers affordable renting for people with low incomes. The residents of La Cruz come from many diverse ethnic backgrounds and include many families with young children, including recent immigrants to the United States. A community liaison helps the residents in providing information, referral services, resources, awareness and opportunities within the St. Cloud area.
Responsibilities: The intern in this position will assist the Community Liaison in providing support, resources, awareness, and opportunities within the St. Cloud area. Further the individual will act as an advocate for residents of the La Cruz Community and assist in maintaining and identifying actions and programs to make La Cruz Community a positive place to live; assist in providing regular contact with households to assess residents needs; establish resource files on topics and outreach programs relevant to LaCruz community, residents and staff and update files on a regular basis.
Requirements: Must be working towards a degree in Human Relations, or other related field. Must be able to intern afternoons for approximately 22 hours a week. Prefer bi-lingual speaking abilities, particularly Somalian.

The Kamau Kambui Circle of Cultural Learning, Inc. – St. Paul, MN ON-GOING
The KKCCL exists to provide experiential learning opportunities that teach about history and encourage healthy dialogue regarding cultural and racial issues. This internship will create a curriculum/manual for the Underground Railroad Simulation. The project entails participating in and learning about the Underground Railroad simulation, outlining the curriculum/manual, determining the medium of the manual and completing as many elements as possible. Organic Consumers Association (OCA) – Little Marais, MN ON-GOING
The OCA is a grassroots, non-profit public interest organization dealing with issues of genetic engineering, food safety, industrial agriculture, fair trade, and environmental sustainability. The OCA is looking for interns to work in their main headquarters to help coordinate their organizing efforts. The responsibilities of an intern include: organizing events, researching and writing, assisting with media outreach, and assisting staff with daily duties such as responding to telephone inquiries and emails. The intern should be self-motivated with strong research and writing skills, and have some computer knowledge. Knowledge of Spanish is also helpful. Partners for Violence Prevention – St. Paul, MN ON-GOING
The mission of PVP is to promote peace, reduce the incidence and impact of violence, and build the capacity for violence prevention in the community. Community Violence Prevention with a Focus on Children addresses the public health of primary prevention, addressing violence before it occurs, which is best accomplished by working with children through community education and awareness, collaboration and provision of resources to schools and community agencies. This program includes West 7th Family Center, which focuses on early childhood education, and the EastSide Peacemakers, a network of agencies dedicated to promoting a peaceful community on the EastSide of St. Paul. Interns are responsible for assisting the Peace Council Coordinator at after school Peace Councils, assisting with Child Witness to Violence training, developing contact with a faith community and speaking to them about issues surrounding violence prevention and peace promotion, organizing and implementing a Large Blue Ribbon Campaign for Child Abuse Prevention Month in April, and assisting in developing activities and materials on the topic of gender violence prevention in EastSide high schools. This position is paid a stipend; hours are flexible and arranged between site and intern but are not 40 hours per week. The position is an annual position, meaning academic year long, not just a semester.

Business Women’s Network (BWN) – The Business Women’s Network focuses on the needs of women in business, nationally and internationally. Throughout various events, activities, and projects they provide women all over the world with opportunities, information, linkages and support. BWN wants to empower business women with the ability to make sound, profitable business decisions, which will ultimately lead to a stronger economy across all corporate and government borders. BWN interns should have an interest in international women’s issues related to business exports and trade.
Diversity Best Practices (DBP) – Diversity Best Practices is a one-stop information center for Diversity and benchmarking. They organize peer-group workshops for their members addressing specific diversity issues (i.e. Mentoring and Leadership, and Multicultural Marketing). They are committed to voice the need to increase equity, equality, advancement, and retention in Corporate America for women and minorities (encompassing not only ethnic groups, but people who have been socially marginalized). Projects include event planning elements for day-long conference and awards dinner, diversity project support, diversity client file organizing, developing a diversity resource library, and organizing special project materials from diversity member files. DBP interns should have well-developed interpersonal skills, professional appearance and manner, is computer literate in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and Internet applications. Experience with desktop publishing (PageMaker, Quark, PowerPoint) is preferred but not required.
Best Practices in Corporate Communications (BPCC) – Best Practices in Corporate Communications builds relationships and develop innovative solutions, which help member companies utilize and improve communication. Interns can focus, but are not limited to, three areas of interest: research-based (helping to write reports and white papers), technology-based (maintaining the BPCC website – both in content and look), and sales/marketing-based (assisting selling the products and services of BPCC). Projects include conference calls and reports/white papers. The Human Rights Center of the University of Minnesota encourages students and residents of the Upper Midwest to undertake opportunities for practical experience related to international human rights. In early April, the Human Rights Center will award approximately twenty grants for transportation, lodging, and food expenses while working with a human rights organization relevant to the purposes of the Center. In principal, placements will average at least ten weeks, although this period will vary according to the individual needs of participants and host organizations. Amigos is an international nonprofit organization founded in 1965. The organization trains and provides opportunities for high school and college students to conduct service projects in Latin America and their home communities. Amigos volunteers and interns spend four to eight weeks in Latin America in a host community with other volunteers. These individuals work closely with community members and partner agency representatives on projects that address needs identified by their host communities. Projects focus on issues such as: community health, community service, environmental health, personal skill-building, and creative expression. AZTECA – Minneapolis, MN
AZTECA soccer league is one of the largest Latino men’s soccer leagues in Minnesota. The organization is offering a summer internship within a non-profit spectrum. The league focuses on bringing families together through a variety of programs and events. The intern will be responsible for marketing and promoting events, assisting in all clinic registrations, creating and managing a database, and managing all aspects of team and player registration. The intern should be able to commit at least 10 hours per week from March 15 through September 30, 2005. The hours do include some nights and weekends. Centro Campesino is an organization dedicated to improving conditions for Latino migrant workers. Centro Campesino provides these workers with the ability to fight for social justice through education and the values faith, hope and justice. Centro Campesino is seeking an intern to help with research of the vegetable processing industry. Research would include the identification and description of major employees, the financial structure of the industry, the global nature of seasonal vegetable processing, and information about the hiring practices of the industry. The intern will be expected to complete a final report in both Spanish and English.
