The Gerontological Society of America (GSA), was founded in 1945 and is the oldest and largest national multidisciplinary scientific organization devoted to the advancement of gerontological research.  The Society's principal missions are to promote research and education in aging, and to encourage the dissemination of research results to other scientists, decision makers, and practitioners. Two special units of GSA are The Association for Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE) and the National Academy on an Aging Society (NAAS). AGHE strengthens GSA's academic institutional ties and expands its curriculum development role. NAAS, a public policy institute of GSA, publishes The Public Policy and Aging Report as well as a series of fact sheets and conducts dialogues on economic and policy issues related to aging.
Responsibilities:  Provide unity through common organization, provide leadership with associations of higher education, public officials, volunteers and others interested in aging education, and show leadership on policies and issues related to higher education.

Cass County Historical Society – Moorhead, North Dakota                       ON-GOING

The Hill Monastic Manuscript Library (HMML) – Collegeville, MN       ON-GOING
HMML is dedicated to the preservation of medieval and renaissance manuscripts for the benefit of future generations.  HMML is offering a 7 month internship for the spring and summer. The summer portion of the internship is paid.  The intern will work with public programs and educational outreach while gaining a variety of experiences working with the HMML collection and The Saint John’s Bible and Arca Artium.  The intern will observe and participate in the day-to-day operations of the library by attending exhibition planning meetings and education/programming efforts; assisting in the development of program materials for HMML; organizing and transporting materials for presentations, exhibits and events; and will also assist in planning and coordinating tours, events and exhibitions.  The intern must be a junior or senior with a strong interest in history and/or art.  The intern must also be comfortable with meeting people and occasionally speaking before groups.  Knowledge of FrontPage, image scanning, PhotoShop, or similar graphic software is also helpful.  The spring internship hours are flexible, depending on student’s schedule. Minnesota WorkForce Center – St. Cloud, MN            ON-GOING
The Minnesota WorkForce Center/Job Service offers seven paid internships each academic year. Interns will work in career centers at area high schools and must be available both fall and spring semesters, from approximately September 1 through May 6.  Interns may make presentation to groups of students  or work one-on-one with them, develop and work with job shadowing in the community, and assist in the career resource center.  The intern must be able to work 24 hours every two-week pay period at $8.00 an hour.  It is essential that the intern is able to work on their own with very little supervision and be a self-starter, self-disciplined, and detail-oriented individual.  The WorkForce Center will give preference to students who wish to earn college credit at CSB/SJU, but participation in the college internship program is not a requirement.  For more information, contact Rick Denk. Murphy's Landing- Shakopee, MN                                       ON-GOING
Murphy's Landing is a living History Museum with over 35 original building representing Minnesota River Valley History 1840s-1890s located in Shakopee, Minnesota. The main focus of the internship is the organization and implementation of the Time Travel Adventure Day Camp and the 19th Century School Days. The position is perfect for the student looking for experience in education, museum program development and museum management. You will be able to input your creative ideas to help shape the camp program. In addition, you will gain skills in personnel management by working with junior and senior high students who will serve as your volunteer helpers. The contract period is eleven weeks beginning in June and ending in August. There may be a possible stipend.

The Stearns History Museum offers internships designed to introduce students to the day-to-day working of a nationally accredited regional history museum.  Internships provide a chance to directly apply academic training in a working environment and provide the opportunity to explore a career as a history museum professional.  Museum interns are assigned a wide range of duties and projects including cataloging artifacts, photographs, and archival manuscripts, researching and implementing exhibits, and working with school children participating in the Museum’s education program.

Barnes County Historical Society/Museum – Valley City, ND

Barnes County Historical Society is one of the larger museums of its kind in the region. Their mission is to promote education through the discovery, collection, and preservation of historical records, articles, and artifacts dealing with Barnes County specifically and adjacent areas generally.  The intern would help with the creation of a hands-on educational exhibit entitled “How Things Work.”  The project entails developing and creating an exhibit of artifacts, such as hand-crank telephones, wool spinning wheels, phonographs, or agricultural equipment, as well as interviewing persons familiar with the artifacts and uses of them.  This is a paid position.

Carlton County Historical Society – Cloquet, MN

Through maintaining a museum and research library as well as hosting regular and special outreach programs to the public, the Carlton County Historical Society seeks to collect, preserve, and disseminate the history of Carlton County.  The intern would research and compile information detailing the history of rural education in Carlton County prior to 1950.  The result of the research will be a small publication or pamphlet and a subsequent museum exhibit which the student will help plan and produce.  This is a paid position.

Chrysalis  -Minneapolis, MN

Chrysalis is looking for several fall interns to work with women and their families to improve their lives.  Chrysalis is an organization that works to organize resources and support so women and children can lead healthy lives.  There are several intern positions which need to be filled.  The child care intern will assist with the direct care of infants, children and youth registered in the Kids’ Cocoon Child Care program.  The intern will also be responsible for development, implementation and evaluation of the program.  The intern will prepare with the head teacher to work with the children and prepare their meals.  Ongoing training concerning the knowledge of issues affecting women will be provided.  Interested students should have previous experience working with children, awareness of the issues surrounding children and families, awareness and respect for diversity, the ability to work with volunteers/staff and the ability to climb down steps and lift 30 pounds.  A minimum six-month commitment is recommended and hours per week are negotiable.  This position is unpaid.  Interested students should contact the name listed below.

Finland Minnesota Historical Society – Finland, MN

The FMHS is dedicated to preserving, collecting and interpreting the history of Finland, MN.  The internship will be involved in collecting the history of the Finland Cooperative Company, a pillar of the local community that celebrates its 90th year in 2003.  The project entails gathering oral and archival history to produce a booklet on the history of the Co-op and its role in the community.  Applicants should have solid research and writing skills with the ability to communicate and work with all kinds of people of all ages.  This paid opportunity is offered through HECUA for summer 2003. Heritage & Windpower Learning Center – Lake Benton, MN

The Heritage & Windpower Learning Center has the mission of preservation and dissemination of knowledge about the history of the Lake Benton area and to relate that history to that of the State of Minnesota.  The organization is offering two to three 2004 spring or summer semester long, unpaid internships. The Irma Wyman Internship in Development & External Relations at HMML
– Collegeville, MN

The Hill Monastic Manuscript Library (HMML) is dedicated to the preservation of medieval and renaissance manuscripts for the benefit of future generations.  HMML has assembled a constantly growing collection of approximately 90,000 manuscripts on microfilm.  The HMML is searching for a student that will partake in an internship for the summer of 2003 that will include developing text, charts and images to be used for development presentations, working with the curator of the Malta study center, leading tours, and other appropriate duties as they occur.  Prospective students should be a junior or senior in college and should have a strong interest in history and or the arts.  Preference will be given to CSB students.  This is a paid internship and will receive a stipend of $4,000 for the summer paid at the rate of $10 per hour averaging 40 hours per week.  E-mail a letter explaining your interest in the internship and attach a resume describing your coursework and relevant experiences to the contact information below.

Itasca State Park – Park Rapids, MN

Itasca State Park is offering two internship positions for the summer of 2004.  These interns will assist the Itasca Park Naturalist in documenting and archiving Itasca State Park’s historic artifacts and documents.  The interns will also assist in conducting oral histories, recording interpretive programs, and arranging for transcribing.  Additional experience may be gained in display development, resource inventories, research, writing, planning, resource management, park programming, and/or park enforcement.  Formal and on-the-job training programs are provided for these tasks.  Applicants should have completed their sophomore year.  Interns majoring in history are most desirable, but other majors will be considered, such as biology, environmental education, or natural resources management.  Interns must have genuine interest and enjoyment in working with the public and in the outdoors.  Both positions begin late May  and run through Labor Day, 40 hours per week.  These are paid internships at $7.40 per hour.  Housing is available at Itasca State Park at approximately $30-$40 a month. Project Description:  Research historical records and locations in Minnesota, South Dakota, and Nebraska where the Mdewakanton Dakota traveled and lived to assist in the repatriation of human remains of the Mdewakanton Dakota.

Minnesota Historical Society – St. Paul, MN

The Minnesota Historical Society is developing a second edition of Northern Lights, a sixth-grade Minnesota history textbook, for publication in 2003.  They are also developing supplementary teacher support materials, such as a teacher’s edition, mapping activities, reading comprehension guides, tests, and primary source-based student activities.  This intern would conduct research of primary sources to support the creation of the Northern Lights teacher materials.  They are looking for an intern interested in Minnesota history, familiarity with primary source research methods, and the ability to write and communicate clearly and accurately.

Minnesota Public Radio is currently looking for a research intern. The main job involves tracking down information at the History Center and other historical societies to help develop stories for their monthly reports in their Minnesota Century Project. This position requires experience in historical research, good writing skills, and an interest in radio production. They are looking for someone willing to work 20 hours per week during the day.

The Olmstead County Historical Society is the leading historical society in Olmstead County and is dedicated to serving as a historic resource center and helping to preserve the past.  The society is currently seeking an intern to update and plan three diversity related projects.  Responsibilities will include: updating the current Second Grade Immigration Tour, assisting in the creation of an immigration history traveling trunk, and updating A Passage to Diversity program.  Applicants should have good oral and written communication skills, computer and typing skills, primary and secondary research experience, a knowledge of immigration and ethnic history, good time management skills, a history or education major, experience with digital photography, and a foreign language proficiency.  This internship was sponsored by the HECUA Partnership Internship Program in 2004.

Railroad Museum of Minot – Minot, ND

The Railroad Museum of Minot works to preserve, share, experience and teach the history and future of the region’s railroads.  The internship will include designing and developing an exhibit on how railroads created, impacted and changed the social and economic development of the region.  The project would entail reviewing and evaluating current exhibits, identification of resources, and brainstorming the ways and means to promote the new exhibit.  Computer and internet literacy, and excellent written and oral communication skills are required.  This opportunity was sponsored by HECUA for summer 2003. Sherburne County Historical Society – Becker, MN

Sherburne County Historical Society (SCHS) is offering an internship position for spring 2005 to assist with a major photo cataloging project.  This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in museum cataloging work.  SCHS has a collection of about 4,000 photographs that appeared in the newspaper in the late 1970s and early 1980s.   These photographs must be identified, cataloged, and properly housed.  The intern will work with SCHS staff organizing this project and will work with volunteers to implement the project.  The intern must have an interest in museum and archival work and excellent attention to detail.  Preference to someone interested in history.  There is a $500 stipend for the semester of 120 hours of work.  The project will also continue in the summer and fall of 2005, with $500 stipends for each of those terms.  To apply, send a letter and resume via land mail or email to Bobbie Scott.
