Alaska State Parks offers volunteer internships in a variety of different areas. They include archaeological assistant, ranger assistant, backcountry ranger assistant, natural history interpreter, park caretaker, and trail crew. You will receive housing and an expense allowance with minimum time commitment. Many positions are available this coming summer.

Aprovecho Research Center - Cottage Grove, OR                  ON-GOING
Starting every March, June, and September groups of up to fourteen interns join our ten staff members for an intensive ten-week learning experience. Classes and activities typically run from 8am to 5pm every weekday. All interns typically live on-site. They apply their newly learned skills every day, cooking with food from their garden, heating and building with wood and other materials from their forest, and using various appropriate technologies to meet their basic needs. Great hands-on experience for those who love the outdoors.

Audubon Center of the North Woods - Sandstone, MN                   ON-GOING
The Audubon Center of the North Woods (ACNW) is a residential environmental learning center near Sandstone, Minnesota that has been teaching children and adults for 25 years. The mission of ANCW is to protect, improve, and promote the enjoyment of the natural environment through formal and informal education, research, centers, and careers. They have an Environmental/Outdoor Education internship, a Wildlife/Rehabilitation internship, and a shorter Summer Environmental/Outdoor Education Internship. Compensation is $280 per month plus room and board.

Badlands National Park – Interior, SD                                 ON-GOING
Badlands National Park is seeking two interns to work in the division of resource education.  Interns will present the Badlands in classroom programs and in an outreach program that travels to elementary and middle schools, staff a visitor center information desk and work on assigned education projects.  The intern will serve as a volunteer for the National Park Service and is expected to work a minimum of thirteen weeks at 40 hours per week.  Free housing is provided with the internship.  The intern must have a good driving record and a valid driver’s license to transport themselves in government vehicles to area schools.  The fall position runs from September 15 through December 15 with an application deadline of July 15.  The spring internship runs from February 15 through May 15 with an application deadline of January 15.  For additional information or an application, call or email the contact below.

Bethel Horizons Nature Center– Dodgeville, WI          ON-GOING
Bethel Horizons Nature Center covers over 500 acres in the Wisconsin driftless area.  The center is offering a spring naturalist intern position from mid-March through the end of the school year with possible summer work available. A second fall opportunity runs from August through November.  The intern will facilitate environmental education programs for school and non-school groups, assist with workshops, and in services, assist with aspects of program management to enhance the experience of the intern position, work with the animal caretaker in the upkeep and care of our reptiles and amphibians, and participate in training sessions and workshops.  Knowledge and interest in natural history and environmental education and three years of college coursework in environmental studies, biology, or related field are required for this position.  A stipend and room are available.  Please send a resume and cover letter expressing interest to Angela Borland.

Boundary Waters Wilderness Foundation – Minneapolis, MN  ON-GOING
This internship opportunity is being offered through Orion Grassroots Network which is currently affiliated with CSB/SJU.  The internship program at the Boundary Waters Wilderness Foundation is designed to provide students with work experience in a non-profit organization including all areas of its operations such as: policy, outreach and education, membership, fundraising, and general administration.  The organization’s mission is to protect, preserve, and restore the wilderness character of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness through public advocacy ecosystem preservation, scientific understanding, user dedication, and enhanced public appreciations.  Interns will report to a director of the organization depending on the intern’s area of interest.  Intern’s responsibilities will include:  assisting in research, developing and writing of fact sheets, and conducting research.  High-energy, creative, detail-oriented team players who know how to work independently and have superior oral and written communications skills are encouraged to apply.  The ability to listen well, having the ability to work with minimum supervision, and manage multiple tasks are also useful intern characteristics.  This is an unpaid internship.  Submit resume, cover letter, and time available to the contact below.

Camp Courage – Maple Lake, MN                                         ON-GOING
Camp Courage operates a school year environmental and outdoor learning center, as well as a summer camp for people with physical and sensory disabilities. Schools from Minneapolis and the surrounding area come to Camp for 2-3 days to participate in classes and activities that include Forest Ecology, Bird Study, Pond Ecology, Cross-Country Skiing, Canoeing, Challenge Course and Orienteering. As an intern your responsibilities include teaching a variety of environmental and outdoor education classes to schoolchildren, 4th to 7th grade. The program runs from May to September. Coordinate evening programs once a week. Host environmental and outdoor education school groups. Assist with other operational duties required for Camp to run smoothly.

Description: 
Carpenter St. Croix Valley Nature Center (CNC) is a private non-profit nature center with a mission to develop and enhance appreciation fro the natural world through quality environmental education, conservation practices, and outdoor experiences for visitors of all ages and capabilities.  The site consists of some 720 acres of diverse habitats on both the Minnesota and Wisconsin side of the river and has 15 miles of hiking trails.
Responsibilities:  Horticulture interns receive training from professional horticulturists, help with the apple orchard utilizing Integrated Pest Managemnet, assist with gardening at the Center, play an active role in prairie restoration, and become involved in all horticulture activities at CNC as they arise.  In addition, all interns at CNC are expected to design and complete an individual project of their choice to be used at CNC in the future.

-"Zero-Waste" Environmental Education Intern -- Paid
Description: 
Carpenter St. Croix Valley Nature Center (CNC) is a private non-profit nature center with a mission to develop and enhance appreciation fro the natural world through quality environmental education, conservation practices, and outdoor experiences for visitors of all ages and capabilities.  The site consists of some 720 acres of diverse habitats on both the Minnesota and Wisconsin side of the river and has 15 miles of hiking trails.
Responsibilities:  The "Zero-Waste" Environmental Education intern will work with Nature Center staff, partners at Eureka Recycling and partners at Dakota County Community P.O.W.E.R. to research, develop, recommend and implement "Zero-Waste" procedures at the Nature Center, and to provide much needed community outreach opportunities focusing on waste reduction at home.  Training seminars required in May and August  through the Partners Internship Program.  Additional details provided upon request.
Qualifications:  Applicants must have good oral and written communication skills.  Public speaking and interpersonal skills will be beneficial, as will research and planning skills.  The interns must be able to stay on task with little supervision and possess an interest in education.  Environmental Education knowledge would be beneficial.  Students must meet all of the following eligibility requirements:  be an undergraduate currently enrolled in a college or university in MN, ND, WI; be returning to school in the fall of 2007 to continue undergraduate studies; not be a relative of any paid or volunteer staff or board member of CNC; not have participated in the Partners Internship Program in the past; and not be a current or past employee.

Ceder Creek Natural History Area – St. Paul, MN                           ON-GOING

Description:  Christmas Tree Farm and Yak Ranch is a farm that specializes in the training and handling of Yak which makes them easier to sell, making dairy products which are donated to Tibetan Monks in the Twin Cities, and producing product for farmer’s markets.
Responsibilities:  The intern will be working independently to contribute to the success and growth of the business by haltering young and old yak, teaching them to be ridden, milking them and assisting in large scale daily chores as needed.  The interns will also be producing butter, cheese, and yogurt from yak milk and helping to increase sales opportunities for frozen yak meat to 3 or 4 farmer’s markets.  Other duties include updating and maintaining the website and conducting market research.

Dakota County is currently offering three internships in areas focusing on planning, environmental education and marketing/communication.  
Planning
The Farmland and Natural Area Program is a 20 million dollar, county-wide program to protect 5,000 – 10,000 acres of agricultural land and natural areas.  The intern position may include the following responsibilities:  landowner outreach, developing communication materials, photo documentation, ecological assessments, project coordination and various GIS applications. This is a paid internship.
Environmental Education
The primary duties of this position are to provide leadership in outdoor education programs that will result in high quality experiences for park visitors.  The position will provide on-site coordination of outdoor education programs and will work closely with the public as a program leader.  This person will also assist with facility operation of the visitor center.  This is a March-October position which may include some weekend and evening hours.  Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree in a science-related field, have a minimum of one year of experience in leading naturalist, outdoor or recreation programs and have a valid Minnesota driver’s license.  Unpaid.
Marketing and Communication
The marketing and communications intern will work with the Parks Communications Specialist on a variety of projects, particularly in the areas of outreach to the community and event planning and coordination.  This position will assist in the marketing effort for the Parks Visitor Services programs including recreation, environmental and outdoor education and facility rental.   Tasks will include writing and distributing press releases, designing flyers, ads and displays; coordinating special events; and implementing
outreach efforts to community organizations and schools.  This is a limited term position with flexible hours to be arranged between the intern and the supervisor (10-15 hours/week).  Willing to work with students who wish to arrange for academic credit. Applicants must be working toward a Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communication or a related field, experience with computers, a Minnesota driver’s license and have a minimum of one year experience in leading naturalist, outdoor education and recreation programs. The intern will gain hands-on experience in all aspects of land management.  The intern will be responsible for identifying and monitoring plant species, surveying of herbaceous and woody plants in study plots, removing and monitoring of non-native, woody and herbaceous plant species and assisting with photo-monitoring or restored sites.  The intern should be willing to work under field conditions and have the ability to work well independently and as part of a team. The Friends of Rydell Refuge Association – Erskine, MN        ON-GOING
The Friends of Rydell Refuge Association (FRRA) is searching for a motivated individual to intern as an FRRA Naturalist at Rydell National Wildlife Refuge for the summer.  Rydell National Wildlife Refuge is located in the prairie pothole region of Northwestern Minnesota between the flat Red River Valley Floodplain to the west and the rolling hardwood forest and lake regions to the east.  The 2,120 acre refuge is a beautiful mosaic of wetlands, bog, maple-basswood forests and tall grass prairie.  Primary intern duties will include staffing the visitor’s center while developing and presenting hikes and nature programs, interpretive writing, and preparing weekly press releases for refuge programs.  Secondary duties will include assisting with biological monitoring and collections and aiding refuge staff as needed.  This opportunity includes a tax-exempt stipend of $150.00 per week, including free on-site housing.  The internship will start in June and extend 12-15 weeks with work weeks usually consisting of eight-hour days, Wednesday-Sunday, from 9:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.  Send cover letter or resume to the address below by mid-April.

This intern would help work with the Product Sales and training Manager to assist in developing and implementing the "Were All Stars" Cookie Pep Fest, a 350 person event. Environmental Education
The Glen Helen Outdoor Education Center offers internships in outdoor and environmental education.  Naturalist interns earn 10 graduate or 12 undergraduate credits (tuition waived); receive free room and board, and a $260 monthly stipend.  This internship runs for the spring semester.
Responsibilities:  Naturalist interns lead groups of elementary and middle school students out on the trails of the Glen teaching them principles of ecology and helping them develop a life-long appreciation for the natural world.
Qualifications:  It is preferred, but not required, that applicants have a background in natural science, biology, environmental studies or other related fields. Interns must have completed at least two years of college and have a strong love for children and a desire to pass on to them a love and respect for the outdoors.

MinnAqua is the Angling and Aquatic Education Program of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.  It is a statewide education program designed to teach angling recreation and stewardship as well as the ecology and conservation of aquatic habitats.  Since it’s inception in 1990 by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, MinnAqua has reached thousands of new anglers throughout Minnesota.  They provide programs and clinics for a wide range of ages and types of groups:  from large community recreation programs, parent child groups, school groups, scouting groups, pre-K to senior citizen groups. 
Responsibilities:  Learn MinnAqua lesson plans, schedule programs, and evaluations, schedule programs with sponsors, present programs during the summer to school age youth, keep program records.

An intern at Big Back Yard Horticulture will develop and implement an organic horticulture management plan for the Science Museum.  The intern will be responsible for incorporating fruiting trees and shrubs into an intensely used urban landscape, develop recommendations for how the horticulture elements of the park might be interpreted to park visitors, create a care manual on basic plant care and develop skills in leading, training, and motivating.   The internship is open to students at junior or senior standing majoring in horticulture or a related field.  This is a 10 hour per week position, Tuesday through Thursday.  The position is paid at $10 per hour. The science intern will interact with museum visitors and interpret current science topics, collect and provide feedback on exhibits and prototypes to the current science development team and produce written training materials for the science team.  The intern will gain experience interpreting current science research to visitors of all ages.  The intern should be of junior or senior standing and majoring in biology, geology, earth science and health medicine.  This is an 8-10 hour per week unpaid position. The program developer intern will research internal biological collections and research information for incorporation into new and existing theatrical presentations on insects and mercury contamination of fish and other wildlife.  The goal of the internship is to prepare technical scientific information for non-technical audiences and to develop content for 2-3 theatrical presentations.  The intern should be of junior or senior standing with an emphasis in ecology or entomology.  This is an 8-10 hour per week, unpaid internship.The archaeology intern will be exposed to archaeology in a museum setting.  Duties will include working on cataloging Red Wing archaeological collections, assisting with the storage and organization of archaeology collections, and researching artifacts.  Experience with prehistorically material culture from the Midwest North America is helpful but not required.  This is an unpaid, 10 hours per week position.

The American Bear Association – Orr, MN
The American Bear Association (ABA) is looking for qualified, energetic interns for the summer of 2003 at the Vince Shute wildlife Sanctuary in Northern Minnesota.  The Sanctuary offers an opportunity for the public to view and learn about wild black bears.  Interns will help to educate the public primarily during open hours, greeting visitors, pointing out and explaining bear activity, giving interpretive talks on bear ecology and behavior, and answering visitors’ questions about bears.  Heavy lifting will be required. The intern will work an average of 9-10 hours a day comprised of a day shift of four to five hours and the evening visitor time, which is five hours.  Some interns will be responsible for planning and implementing a specific educational program during the summer.  A stipend of $25 per week is provided. The Institute of Ecosystem Studies (IES) – New Paltz, NY
IES, sponsored through the Student Conservation Association, is an ecological research and education center located on 2000 acres of protected land in New York. Minnesota Project - St. Paul

On the Path to Community Sustainability is a joint effort by SJU/CSB and the Minnesota Project. The summer internship will be working at the Minnesota Project's offices in St. Paul. The project has a dual purpose: assisting small Central Minnesota cities, including St. Joseph and Cold Spring, to move toward sustainability by helping community leaders to weave the thread of the environment into local decision-making. The second is to involve students of SJU/CSB in sustainable community service-learning projects in nearby communities. The work this summer will include researching and writing a set of 10-15 case studies and preparing them for printing and distribution to community leaders in smaller Greater Minnesota cities and towns. The internship will also involve helping to set up community meetings and events in Cold Spring and St. Joseph. This is an internship for a junior, senior, or graduating senior, preferably with environmental studies or community development background. The job requires someone who likes to begin new things, is not afraid of some ambiguity, is self-directed, able to find the answer to almost any question, fearless about calling strangers on the phone, able to synthesize information, and writes well. The National Park Service is seeking enthusiastic, responsible candidates for positions that will be involved with two programs: The Invasive Species Inventory and the Birding Boat Riverboat Education program.  No previous experience is required but applicants should have an interest in education, natural resources and the National Park Service.  Interns involved with the Invasive Species Inventory team will work under the direction of Resource Managers and other staff from the National Park Service to identify and document the presence of invasive plant species in natural areas along the Mississippi River in the Twin Cities.  Team leaders will work with staff early in the semester to set up the spring-fall inventory schedule and develop and update training materials for volunteers.  Interns with the Birding Boat Riverboat Education team will work with Park Rangers from the National Park Service to develop and conduct the Birding Boat Riverboat Program.  This program teaches visitors and students basic skills in bird observation and exciting Mississippi River facts from a moving riverboat.  The intern will also assist with many other aspects of the program including marketing, logistics, and preparation of the Birding Board guide and other material given to visitors.  Through both opportunities students will gain valuable field experience, improve skills, and help contribute to the Mississippi River and its surrounding areas.  For more information please use the contacts below.  Invasive Species Inventory Internships are available spring and summer. Ramsey-Washington Metro Watershed District – St. Paul, MN

Ramsey-Washington Metro Watershed District is offering three internship positions for students majoring in natural resources, environmental studies, or related field.  Requirements for each position: the ability to lift items weighing up to 60 pounds and willingness to use own vehicle. The District will pay for mileage.  Initial work hours are flexible but must be full-time during the summer months.  The internships are paid at $10.00 per hour. 

Two interns are needed from May 2 through September 30, 2005.  The interns will be involved in seeding and planting in natural and created wetlands, uplands, and lakeshore areas.  The interns will work with students on volunteer planting projects; will be responsible for the collection and release of purple loosestrife beetles; and assist in the collection of biological and physical/chemical data in selected District wetlands.

University of Minnesota Extension Service/Aitkin and Sherburne County – Elk River, MN

The University of Minnesota Extension Service is the major outreach arm of the University of Minnesota – which is a land grant institution with a mission to serve the public through applied research and education.  There are Extension offices on every campus of the U and in each of Minnesota’s 87 counties.  In Aitkin County the internship is a field staff position shared with the local Clean Water Partnership and focuses on water resources/water quality.  The intern will work one-on-one with lakeshore owners to provide information and resources relating to aquatic vegetation.  Major educational events include the Rivers and Lakes Fair, participate and follow-up with participants on lakescaping workshops, working with youth education in summer camping and day camp programs.  Intern will research topics and write segments related to water quality for the Aitkin County “Living in the Country” Publication.  In Sherburne County the intern will provide technical assistance and educational opportunities to Sherburne County citizens and communities regarding composting and yard waste reduction, the reduction of the proper use of pesticides and fertilizers, proper shoreline and lawn management techniques, including shore land re-vegetation and naturalization, that promote a sustainable environment and improve water quality.  The intern will assist in developing and implementing these programs and projects.  The intern will be responsible for assisting in the coordination and training of interested Master Gardeners and Shore land Volunteers.   This is a paid position.
