Social Security Information

If you are on a F-1 visa and work part-time on-campus, or work part-time off-campus with USCIS authorization, you are not subject to social security taxes. However, you will need to obtain a Social Security Card to work and for other purposes such as to obtain a driver's license.

You must go in person to the Social Security Office in St. Cloud to:

  • Obtain a SSN
  • Replace a lost or missing SSN card
  • Correct information on your SSN card, for example, your name spelling

International Student Program usually takes students to the Social Security Office at the beginning of Fall semester.

Required documents

When you apply for a SSN you need to bring the following documents (original) to the Social Security Office:

  • I-20
  • I-94 (Arrival/Departure card)
  • Passport
  • Letter from Student Employment stating that you are employed by College of Saint Benedict/Saint John's University (only students who have jobs may obtain an SSN). The International Student Program can help you obtain this letter
  • Letter from Addy Spitzer stating your student status
  • Completed SS-5 Form to apply for a SSN, or a replacement SSN, or a change of information on your record
