Application for Extension of Academic Program
The end date on a student’s I-20 form is determined by the academic department’s estimate of the length of time an average students needs to complete the program. According to Federal Regulations, students who are studying in the U.S. in F-1 visa status may only extend their program prior to the end date on their I-20. Furthermore, the delay in completion of studies must be shown to be “caused” by compelling academic or medical reasons such as changes of major or research topics, unexpected research problems, or documented illness. Please print out, fill, and submit the Application for Extension of Academic Program and I-20 Form to the International Student Program Office.
