Xuyang Tang

Xuyang Tang is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Japan.

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.

In the middle of November, a couple of CSBSJU students and I went to our Japanese friend, Mikako's house. She introduced us to two of her relatives, her grandma and her uncle. Her grandma was a professional Japanese calligraphy teacher, and she taught us writing Japanese calligraphy. Her uncle taught us how to make Udon noodles. We also tried on kimonos and had a very delicious Japanese feast at her uncle's house.

Why did you choose the program in which you participated?

I wanted to learn about Japanese language, culture and economics.

Describe your overall study abroad experience.

Traveling in Japan presents the beauty of the country. Living in Tokyo teaches me to survive in the clash of Japanese traditions and globalization. Studying in Bunkyo gives me a chance to make many great international friends.

How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?

The trip gave me a much better understanding of the mechanism of the Japanese society. I learned about the Japanese systematic method of dealing with everything, as well as the value of patience and procedure. Before the trip, I used to think of Japan as harmonious entity with very few social problems. However, living in Japan taught me that the Japanese society is currently facing some very serious problems, such as the aged work force and feminism.

What advice do you have for future travelers?

Pack light and don't judge.
