Theresa Lehn

Theresa Lehn is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Greece and Italy.

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.

A cultural impression that happened to me was when I went one a weekend trip by myself to a small Italian town called Tociella. It was no bigger than 75 people and it was filled with family hospitality. I was sitting in a restaurant eating dinner when the family who owned the restaurant came out and started waiting dinner with me. They did not speak English well, and I couldn't speak Italian well either, so the entire meal was spent laughing and speaking in broken English and Italian to each other. It made me realize that no matter where you come from, or who you are language does not have to be a barrier between nations. All it takes is time and patience to sit down and get to know each other and you will make it through the language, and get to the heart of a person.

Why did you choose the program in which you participated?

I chose to study on the Roman-Greco program because it gave me a chance to live in two different countries during a period of 4 months, instead of just one country. I also have been fascinated by art history, and the ancient Roman and Greek culture. So, this was the program for me.

Describe your overall study abroad experience.

AMAZING! (This is almost impossible to do.)

How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?

This trip has made a major impact on my life. I believe in myself and the goodness of others so much more than what I ever did before. It has made me realize that I have set high goals for myself in life, and that, that is ok and I have the determination and will to make those things happen, and I will make those things happen.

What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?

My advice would be to enjoy every second you are abroad because before you know it, it will be gone. Also do as many things as you can while you are abroad, spend your money on experiences, not souvenirs.
