Tara Evanger

Tara Evanger is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Greece and Italy.

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.

One of my favorite places I went to was the island of Capri off the coast of Italy. A friend and I were trying to find our hostel in the rain, which is difficult in itself when you're in a new place for the first time. We tried taking a bus, but no one was able to tell us where to go once we got off at the bus stop because some of the roads are walking roads, not driving roads. Luckily, an old man tried to help us find where we were going, but he didn't speak any English. We eventually found the place we were looking for. The next morning when we were leaving, we ran into the same man working in his vineyard. He asked us if we found it okay! We thanked him and much as possible for pointing us in the right direction. He was the cutest old man ever, and by observing and talking to him you got a really good taste of the atmosphere on the island.

Why did you choose the program in which you participated?

I am very interested in Greek/Roman mythology. I am also interested in Greek/Roman history as well as the Greek, Latin, and Italian languages. I also wanted to see the most that I could possibly see.

Describe your overall study abroad experience.

Study Abroad was the greatest challenge I've ever beat in my life. It was also the greatest, funest adventure I've ever been a part of. Study Abroad made me a better person. I will never be the same.

How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?

The trip has affected me in more ways that I probably know. I have a different view of the world, of people, and of myself. I have a very open mind. My goals and aspirations have changed. I want to see and learn as much about the world as I possibly can. I also am affected by the people I traveled with. When you're by yourself in a foreign country, can't communicate very well with natives, and haven't showered in 3 days, you learn to depend on the people around you. They are able to pick you up when you're down, and you do the same for them.

What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?

Go with the flow. You can't control everything. Create a budget plan with your family before the trip. Pack light! Buy souvenirs that MEAN something to you and will make you remember the trip. Take TONS of pictures. Keep a journal or blog. Explore as much as you can (without a map). People from home will miss you, and you will miss them, but DO NOT let it get you down; home will be here when you get back.
