Shayla Swartz is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Greece and Italy.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
Our group traveled to one of the Greece Islands together for the weekend. The ferry was leaving back to Athens at a specific time, and as usual my roommates and I were cutting it close! As we SPRINTED through the streets on our way to the port a local yelled out at us, "SLOW DOWN! YOU'RE IN GREECE!" I've been raised in a culture that always has a place to be and a deadline to keep. The local helped me realize to "stop and smell the roses". I reminder that I think our culture needs more often!
Why did you choose the program in which you participated?
In high school I was bit by the "travel bug" after a few of my high school friends participated in a two week long Spain program through my school. I knew that studying in a place that required specific language skills was not for me. After reading "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants", i feel in love with Greece. When senior year rolled around I was thrilled to find out that St. Ben's had a program that traveled to Greece. Italy, was a bonus! And for my first trip out of the country, the Greco-Roman program allowed me to see A LOT of Europe.
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
My Study Abroad experience was a once in a life time opportunity. It gave me a chance to see my world through another culture's eyes and see how blessed I am here in the U.S. I was able to grow on so many levels and made friendships that will last a lifetime. My Study Abroad experience was priceless.
How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?
The trip was a wonderful growing experience. I feel that I am more independent, confident, and more knowledgeable about my own culture and others. This was my first trip out of the U.S. The program really "opened my eyes" to a lot of issues that I have taken for granted here in the states. The experience helped me realized how we are different, but more importantly, how we are the same.
What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?
My best piece of advice for future Study Abroad students is to make the most out of your "free time". On the weekends, go to an island, a new city, or a cultural event. After classes, explore the neighborhood markets and "get lost" downtown. You will get the most out of your experience if you take advantage of seeing the country, city, and neighborhood you are in.
