Rebecca Suhr

Rebecca Suhr is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Guatemala.

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.

I lived with a family of 8 people in house with one bathroom and not very much space in general. It was a humbling experience that made me realize the importance of family in Guatemala.

Why did you choose the program in which you participated?

I didn't want to go some place where I wouldn't be completely immersed. I had only heard good things about the Guatemala program and the amazing experiences from all the previous groups. The service learning aspect was something else that led me to choosing this program.

Describe your overall study abroad experience.

My experience was one-of-a-kind. I would do it all over again in a heartbeat. My Spanish improved exponentially. I made lifelong friends.

How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?

I am a lot more comfortable with my communication. In Guatemala, the language barrier made it very difficult to really express what you meant. When I returned, it just seemed so much easier to talk to anyone.

What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?

IT GOES BY TOO FAST! Take advantage of all your time there. It's OK to be scared, nervous, excited, or sad when leaving for a semester; everyone is going through the same thing. Don't miss an opportunity to try a new food, visit a different place or meet a new person. You WILL have a life changing experience.
