Patrick Sinner is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Greece and Italy.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
On my arrival in Athens, I could not find our address for the life of me. My friend and I ended up spending four hours walking the streets of Athens in the middle of the night. But throughout the ordeal, we had friendly Athenians go out of their way to attempt to help us find our way. Basic human kindness and compassion extends to all different cultures and countries.
Why did you choose the program in which you participated?
As a history major, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to see Europe and Italy and Greece in particular. Each location is steeped in the past and I thought it would be a great way to experience history first hand
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
My study abroad experience exceeded every one of my expectations. It was amazing walking through and seeing places that I had only read about or seen in books. I also developed a deeper understanding of other cultures as well as my own in relation to them. It made me a more well rounded person
How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?
I have become a more self-reliant person since completing this trip. We basically lived by our selves without much of a support network and we thrived. I know I am a much more competent traveler and can hold my own in any situation thrown my way because we had to be able to deal with problems on our own while abroad.
What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?
Don't sweat the small stuff and make the most of your time there. If you concentrate too much on what could go wrong or small obstacles along the way, you will miss out on the great experiences that you will remember for the rest of your life. Also, when you come home, you laugh at the difficulties and remember the amazing things you have seen and done while you were abroad.
