Nakita Poon Kong

Nakita Poon Kong is an Ambassador who studied abroad in China and South Africa.

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.

China: The first few days I was there, It was shocking to see social customs such as squatting, smoking etc. It definitely made a lasting impression because it was something that I never could've imagined.

Why did you choose the program in which you participated?

I chose China because I wanted to learn more about my cultural heritage as well as I knew it would've been something completely different to anything that I was accustomed to.

Describe your overall study abroad experience.

My study abroad experiences have taught me things that I would not have learned if I didn't grasp these opportunities. They have opened my eyes to the world which I now feel is at my fingertips. I cannot sum up my experience in words. I can tell you that they have made me explore myself, as well as where I come from, but most importantly, where I may go.

How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?

Both trips affected me in various ways. I am different because experiences change people and I've had a full year of experiences. I've matured, I've opened my eyes and I've really looked at the world around me. I learned a lot about myself as well.

What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?

Embrace every moment of the journey. Reflect on what you experience as much as you can. Do as many things as possible. Soak up the culture. Appreciate the opportunity.
