Marita Vievering is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Spain.

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
Part of the trip that was very near to my heart was joining a bible study group at one of the local churches. I sought this program out on my own, and it was one of my favorite parts. I was able to share in a faith community that was similar to home, yet very unique. These people not only welcomed me to their groups and masses, but also to their homes dinner parties. Through this program I was able to bond with Spanish citizens at a deeper level.
One experience related to this was through the bible study program, we were invited to a women's house and she was throwing a dinner party. I was invited and had the opportunity to talk with people of all ages! One of the younger girls was working on English homework, and we taught her all about George Washington in Spanish (Who would of thought!)
Why did you choose the program in which you participated?
I chose to study in Spain because I wanted to both advance my skills in speaking and comprehending Spanish as well as experience the unique culture of Spain.
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
The focus of the program was studying Spanish at IE University and was also enhanced by our ability to perpetuate our Spanish by living with host families. I was given the amazing opportunity as an elementary education major, to teach English in the Spanish school system, as well as tutor English to two of the professor's children. Joining a local bible study, the school's volleyball team, and the school's choir were also highlights! Lastly taking the opportunity to travel Europe for two weeks after the end of the program was amazing.
How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?
During the trip I had time to reflect on myself and grow as a person, due to the fact I was so far away from everything that I deemed to be normal. Also through gaining a global perspective, I was able to grow as a person and know what I value. This trip has also opened the door for me in living or volunteering internationally
