Leah Christenson is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Italy and Greece.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
Let's just say that going into the program I didn't know much (well, any) Greek or Italian. I was nervous about that - but the people of the countries were SO willing to help - it was incredible.
A specific instance was going to the market. My friend, Nikki and I always went to the market together in Rome. Every time we got wonderful fresh fruits, veggies, bread, you name it. We stopped at the same egg stand EVERY time we went to the market. The same old lady was always working and would help us order the eggs -- in Italian. She was so encouraging and happy to help. This experience, being such a small one shows the lasting impact of kindness within new cultural experiences.
Why did you choose the program in which you participated?
I was very interested in the Roman-Greco program for many reasons. One, when looking through the list of programs it just stood out to me. From there, I did research on the countries and KNEW this was the program I wanted to go on. This program is unique in that it offers two different sites to study from...sites that are similar and different at the same time. I was also very interested in the rich art and history backgrounds of both countries. My deciding factor was that the Roman-Greco program would allow me to study classes outside my major. Who could opt out on a change to try a NEW amazing experience at the age of 20? Not I!
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
Living abroad in Rome and Athens was literally an unforgettable experience. The memories and friendships I have developed will stay with me forever. The time I had was special and is something that helped me to develop as a person. My time spent abroad can simply not be expressed through words.
How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?
The trip has affected me in so many ways. Ways that even I am unable to see. I feel that since I have been home I have a different appreciation for time. America tends to be pretty chaotic. Rushing to get here in there and marking everything in their palm pilots or planners. In Europe we ate what some times turned into three hour meals. That was normal - it was refreshing and relaxing. I have taken time since I've been home to stop what seems to be hustle and bustle around me to really appreciate the time I have with loved ones and friends.
What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?
Be it cliche or not, LIVE EVERY SECOND of your trip. When are you going to get an experience like this again? Have no regrets. When it comes down to experiencing the culture and city or doing homework...I hope you pick the first. Be flexible. It is hard to know how things will work out...be flexible with any situation. RESEARCH before you leave. Once you get abroad the last thing you want to do is spend time in front of a computer trying to figure out where to go!
