Emily Field

Emily Field is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Italy and Greece.

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.

While abroad we got to see the presidential election through the eyes of an average European. Talking with local residents and shop owners as the Election Day approached helped me shape a new understanding of how the world views American politics and the U.S. administration. I was constantly asked about my presidential vote and it was normal to be confronted daily by strangers about the issue. At first it was strange and seemed invasive, but eventually I understood why native Italians and Greeks wanted to discuss these important subjects. The policies of the US affect these European countries directly and indirectly and the lives of others are greatly impacted. It is safe to say, by my observation, that Europeans are more educated on world news and current events than Americans, and living in that kind of environment during the election time was an eye-opening experience.

Why did you choose the program in which you participated?

The academic and professor reputations. The ability to see 2 countries in one semester and the fact that the program offers many opportunities to travel to towns outside of our residence. Learning about early ancient history of the Greeks and Romans was also highly anticipated.

Describe your overall study abroad experience.

Living in Rome and Athens exposed me to learning environments and professors that I could have only dreamed of. Every single day of my trip was an adventure that led me on a mental, physical, emotional, psychological, and moral journey. My study abroad experience sparked my curiosity for other cultures, especially for those far different from my own.

How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?

I learned that the world is a lot bigger than the bubble I live and work in. I think about the bigger picture more, since I have been back. I was exposed to worldly issues that are astonishingly not widely publicized in our media. I brought home a perspective on the United States that I would not have developed had I not lived abroad. I want to speak to others about what I have learned and spread the knowledge I have acquired about European lifestyles.

What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?

Dive deep within and ask yourself honestly, if you are ready to live in an environment that will challenge your social, cultural and moral beliefs. Studying abroad is an amazing experience that leads you on a challenging personal journey. You must be someone that is ready to live and think openly about others.
