Emily Buggy is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Chile.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
I participated in a "taller de trapecio" which was like a trapeze, gymnastics class. I had to take the bus to the neighboring town to get to class which was held in an old theater. The location was interesting and not quite as professional as anything you would find in the states but it was an amazing experience. It is not exactly the type of class you would find here either but it seemed to be way more common in Chile. By participating in the class I built many friendships and integrated myself into Chilean culture. Nothing else I did provided as good of an opportunity to meet Chileans my age, to converse and learn. I was also able to pick up on many cultural habits of the youth that I otherwise would not have noticed.
Why did you choose the program in which you participated?
I am a Spanish major and wanted to focus on improving my Spanish skills and learning more about Hispanic cultures. I was interested in Chile because I knew it was one place I would not visit on my own. I felt like it would give me a great opportunity to grow, get out of my comfort zone and meet knew people. I also felt that the academic aspect of the program best fit my needs for my Spanish major and what I had left to fulfill.
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
Study abroad was the best decision I have made. Living in a new culture for four months will totally transform who you are and the way you see the world. It is a life changing experience that everyone should have.
How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?
I have learned to trust in myself and I am now more confident in my abilities to live and travel in a foreign country.
My world view has changed so much since going to Chile. I no longer see things from just the American perspective and cannot consider myself only American anymore. Chile has won part of my heart.
I became close to many friends and my host family and will never forget them. Having contacts and people you love and care about in another country changes everything.
What Advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?
Go out on a limb. Go where your best friends are not and try as many new experiences as you can. Pack way less than you think you will need! Meet local people- they are amazing and will teach you a ton, plus they want to learn about you and your culture.
