David Camerino

David Camerino is an Ambassador who studied abroad in China.

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.

The Chinese generally were the most inclusive, welcoming and friendly people I've encountered. Simply interacting with the student body at Southwest University & the greater Chinese population was an experience in itself.

Why did you choose the program in which you participated?

China is a growing player in international politics & I believe it is necessary to have at least a rudimentary understanding of what may soon be the United States' biggest ally/competitor.

Describe your overall study abroad experience.

Studying in China was a fantastic way to experience a vastly different and ancient culture, which at the same time is rapidly modernizing thanks to the hard work of people that are really quite similar to Americans. It was good to travel to the other side of the planet and see that people have more in common than people realize.

How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?

I've come away with a somewhat altered perspective on the integration of international students, specifically Chinese students, on our campus. Experiencing the welcoming atmosphere the Chinese showed us & seeing how poorly integrated Chinese exchange students are here at Saint John's and Saint Ben's is deeply concerning to me. I am trying to branch out to these students so that they don't feel like they welcomed us & we ignore their presence.

What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?

Don't pass-up the opportunity to study abroad, because it's a great time in your life to get a bit acquainted with the external factors we must learn to cooperate with. Also, make lots of friends in the places you go. Don't exclusively stick with your group. Getting to know the locals is an indescribably rewarding experience.
