Brooke Beyer is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Australia.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
Our group traveled to Broome (northern Australia) to live with the aboriginal people for a week. We were without TV, suitable housing, and transportation during that time. It was an extremely simplistic way of life. 100 degree heat and humidity did not help, but it turned out to be a humbling experience - I now appreciate the life i have much more. That week put everything into perspective for me. I am grateful for what I have.
Why did you choose the program in which you participated?
My sister had participated in the Spring Study abroad experience in Australia and had nothing but the best things to say about it... I also wanted to visit family friends and experience the culture. When else would I have ever lived in Australia for 5 months?!
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
The study abroad experience is something different to each individual who partakes in this fascinating opportunity. Hands down, this was the best decision of my life. I now have the ambition to travel and seek greater opportunities. My life is full of rich and wonderful memories that I will forever cherish.
How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?
Studying abroad is the best decision I have ever made. It is without a doubt, that the experience has changed my perspective and overall outlook on life. I grew to know more about the culture, the people I met, the peers I lived with, and also grew to learn more about myself!
What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?
Don't spend a second sitting around... Meet people, grow to know others. Take challenges... do things you never thought you would do. Completely immerse yourself in the wonderful culture you are experiencing.
