Breanna Peterson is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Greece and Italy.

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
There were strikes and riots in Athens, Greece, and a few strikes in Rome, Italy which opened my mind to the cultural work and living conditions that exist in each place. Also, it was unique to experience my first U.S. presidential election while in another country. It showed me how aware of the U.S. other parts of the world are, while most Americans don't know who the leaders are in other countries, much less other economic conditions.
Why did you choose the program in which you participated?
It gave me an opportunity to take classes I would not otherwise be taking on campus, and allowed me to experience hands on learning in each counry. I also had heard from friends who had gone in previous years what an amazing trip it was.
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
My study abroad experience will stay with me for a lifetime. I met incredible people, experienced more than I ever thought possible in a short amount of time, and discovered who I want to be and what I want to do with my life. I was finally in a situation where I was the minority, and it taught me a lot about trials that others might be facing. It was truly unique.
How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?
I am more aware of cultural differences, and differences between the beliefs and values of my owm peers. I have become more self-aware of my actions, how I present myself, and discovered that I can handle pressure and stress outside of my comfort zone.
What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?
Take every opportunity to explore that you get. Meet local people, and immerse yourself in the culture(s). You may only be in that place once, so make the most of your experiences. Let go of your security blanket and do something you wouldn't normally do or have to chance to do.
