Angela Tate is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Galway, Ireland.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
When we were in Derry, we got a walking tour of the city from a native (who just happened to be our archaeology professor's nephew!). He gave firsthand accounts of the troubles in the North. He grew up going during the warfare and it is a huge part of his childhood. Hearing his stories and walking through his city with him made me feel the impact of the "troubles" like I never could have otherwise. I'll never forget the passion he felt for Ireland and its eventual peace. It was during this tour that I got a true sense of the Irish character and the rich history of this country and its people.
Why did you choose the program in which you participated?
I am Irish and going to Ireland has always been my dream. When I found out I could study there, I knew it was the perfect choice. As an English major, it fit perfectly with my 4-year plan. Ireland is filled with a rich literary history, so I knew I would be immersed in the type of learning that interests me most.
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
My semester in Ireland was, without a doubt, the most beneficial semester of my entire academic career. I learned more than I would in a classroom. I learned about culture, people, lifestyles, another country, and most importantly, myself. I am completely changed because of my time in Ireland, and I would do every single part of it - the good and the bad - over again if I could.
How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?
This trip has changed so much of my worldview. I see the bigger picture now - at least more so than I did before. I was able to see the United States, and therefore Americans, from the perspective of another culture. The world seems more approachable, and I learned that people everywhere are ultimately the same at their core. I am fascinated by other cultures and countries and can't wait to immerse myself more in other countries. I am more open, understanding, and willing to learn about different places and people.
