Parents Health & Safety Information

We know that your son/daughter's health and safety is of utmost importance to you. We also know that these concerns increase during study abroad. We hope that these tools and resources will serve as a foundation for discussion, and action in the case of an emergency or health concern abroad.

Responsible Study Abroad: Good Practices for Health and Safety

The following list of health and safety responsibilities for parents/guardians is adapted closely from NAFSA's "Responsible Study Abroad: Good Practices for Health and Safety."  For more information, visit www.nafsa.org.

Our participants’ parents/guardians should:

  • Be informed about and involved in the decision of the participant to apply for and be accepted for a position on a particular program.
  • Obtain and carefully evaluate participant program materials, as well as related health, safety, and security information.
  • Discuss with your son or daughter his or her travel plans and activities that may be independent of the study abroad program.
  • Engage in a thorough discussion of safety and behavior issues, insurance needs, and emergency procedures related to living abroad.
  • Be responsive to requests from the OEA for information regarding the participant.
  • Keep in touch with your son or daughter while they are abroad.  Agree as a family how often you will talk.  It is oftentimes very helpful to establish a regular calling time (i.e. every other Sunday evening).
  • Be aware that sometimes your son or daughter, rather than the OEA, may most appropriately provide some information.
