Lisa Ohm Bio

Anna Lisa Ohm is delighted to direct her fourth CSB/SJU program in Salzburg, Austria,  one of Europe’s most beautiful cities. She has been a Minnesota resident for over 20 years, but, Colorado-born, she loves the mountains. Since her high school had no German program (she took Latin) she started German in college and is now full professor (PhD from the University of California/ Santa Barbara). She happily teaches all levels of language and literature and especially likes to explore with students the cultural contexts in which texts are embedded. She completes a three-year term as MCL chair (Department of Modern and Classical Language). Her favorite areas are 19th-century literature, classical drama (Goethe/Schiller), contemporary film, and the role of women in literature. In 1999 her translation from German to English of, and scholarly introduction to, The Life of High Countess Gritta von Ratsinourhouse was published by the University of Nebraska Press. She has taught first-year seminar, senior seminar, and courses in GWST (Gender and Women’s Studies), and is a former director of the GWST program. Her current research is on a 19th-century Swiss woman writer and teaching literature in the undergraduate classroom.

Lisa loves to travel, but prefers extended stays in a country. Prior to grad school, she volunteered four years in the U.S. Peace Corps in Bolivia and Tunisia in community development and teaching ESL (English as a Second Language). She continues teaching ESL in the summer to Japanese students at SJU and/or in Okinawa. In 1999 she directed a short-term study abroad group to Berlin and Prague, two of her favorite European cities. Her goal is to help every student get the most possible out of a semester abroad, both inside and outside the classroom.
