Herbarium Nomenclature, or How the Herbarium Got Its Name

The herbarium is named after Gordon and JoAnne Bailey.  The Bailey name is familiar to plant lovers because they own and operate Bailey Nurseries, Newport (MN), one of the largest wholesale nurseries in the upper Midwest.  The Bailey's have a long history of association with St. John's and St. Ben's.  Gordon graduated from St. John's and served on the St. John's Board of Regents and the Council of the St. John's Arboretum.  Several of the Bailey children also attended SJU/CSB.  In recognition of their generous support of St. John's, the Herbarium was named after the Bailey family in 1999.
