Linying is an Ambassador who did an internship in Bosnia-Herzegovina
Why did you choose to intern abroad and how did you decide on this program?
I heard this program from one of my friends. She knew that I would like to have an intern in the summer, and then she strongly recommended me this program. Before I decided to apply this program, I did some research on this program and this country. It is located in East Europe and I have never been to any countries in Europe before. What I thought is this program would be my chance not only to have intern experience, but also travel and enjoy in the different country. As an Econ major student, I have been interested in the economy in BiH. Having the internship in BiH would give me more senses about economy in the real world. Thus, I decided to come this program.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
People in BiH especially in Banja Luka do not speak English very frequently; they have their own language. Usually it is hard for me to communicate with them in English. In Banja Luka, usually people need to call taxi to come instead of having taxi on the road. One day, I would be late if I did not call a taxi, but I could not communicate with them in the phone because of language. Then I went to a store and asked a lady to help. I talked to her in English at first time, but she could not understand. I repeated the sentence and used my body language. I even took my phone to show that I would like to call someone. Finally, she understands what I said and would like to help me to call taxi. Even we had the problem on communicating in the same language, we solved one thing together and she was very nice. I feel warm in different country.
Describe your overall internship abroad experience.
This two months internship is one of the most valuable experience for me. I've learned and enjoyed different cultures. People are really friendly and like to communicate and share their ideas with me. This internship makes me to think more and see the wold from the different side.
Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of doing an internship abroad? How has interning abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?
I am the person who likes to travel around the world. Spending a summer to go abroad is the best way to travel and dig deeply on one country. I do not only see the beautiful scenery, but also meet and make friends with different culture. As an international student who studies in the Untied States for three year, I study how to be independent. However, this time, I become more independent because I come to the country that I am totally not familiar with. This internship teaches me to try my best to adapt a new environment quickly. This internship gives me practical experience on thinking as Economist.
What advice can you offer for CSB/SJU students who are considering or planning to intern abroad?
When you arrive the country that you are going to have the internship, you might be shocked at the beginning and you may have homesick, but don't worry about it too much. Just be independent and brave to communicate with others. After you are getting to be familiar with the country, you will totally like and enjoy the life in the last few weeks.
