Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?

I have always had an interest in traveling but studying abroad never really crossed my mind until attending CSBSJU. After learning about the nationally ranked programs CSBSJU has to offer, I knew studying abroad was something I couldn't pass up. As a Global Business Leadership major,I was instantly attracted to the London study abroad program because of the international internship opportunity and the ability to easily travel throughout Europe.

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.

The day before I left for London I had so many mixed emotions and questioning why I ever thought living in a foreign country for 4 months was a good idea. During the plane ride over to London I still had my concerns about being home sick for the duration of my program. After the first few weeks in London it finally hit me that those concerns were gone. It was a Sunday afternoon coming home from a long weekend of traveling when I made the comment "I can't wait to get home," my friends asked if I was referring to home as in our flat in London or home back in Minnesota. I realized in that moment that I truly meant home as in our flat in London. To this day that moment has had a lasting impression, realizing how quickly and easy it was to adjust to living in London and how I consider London my home.

Describe your overall study abroad experience.

It is hard to put into words all the amazing experiences I had during my time abroad. I could spend days talking about my experiences abroad. I was lucky enough to travel to 8 different countries and see the world. From seeing the beautiful Cliffs of Moher to eating gelato while walking the streets of Rome to climbing the stairs up the Eiffel Tower, I will cherish these memories forever. My study abroad experience was absolutely amazing. Studying abroad in London is one of the best decisions I have ever made and I would do it all over again in a heartbeat.

Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?

There are so many benefits to spending a semester abroad. One of the biggest benefits I took away from my time is London is personal growth. I became more independent and confident. By the end of my 4 months in London was capable of navigating my way around a large city and felt comfortable wondering the streets of London alone. London being a multicultural city, allowed myself to learn about many different cultures and really opened my eyes to the world. It gave me a different perspective and taught me to be more open minded. Overall, studying abroad was great learning experience.

What advice can you offer for CSB/SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?

As someone who had mixed emotions before going abroad, my advice to students considering going abroad would be to step out of your comfort zone and go for it. There are some many things you can take away from spending a semester abroad that can't even compare to things taught in the classroom.Go abroad and have an experience of a lifetime or one day you will look back and regret not going when you had the chance. Studying abroad is truly the best four months of your life.
