Emily is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Spain
Major: Hispanic Studies, Communication
Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?
I chose to study abroad because I knew it would be an amazing experience to immerse myself in another country's culture and see the world from a different point of view.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
Around Easter time, my host family showed me a traditional dessert they make. I told them about Easter Eggs, and the next weekend they invited their whole extended family over so that I could show them how to make them. I had an awesome time showing them part of my culture, while being immersed in their family life.
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
I'm really glad that I went, with the Spain program it was truly a full immersion. We lived with host families, had all of our classes in Spanish, and I volunteered at a local elementary school teaching English, which was a great learning opportunity for me as well as the kids.
Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?
Studying abroad can open your eyes to completely new ways of thinking and ways of living life. Personally, I have become more accepting and open to the various ways to live "right", and academically I have grown stronger in my foreign language abilities. Professionally this program showed me some of the opportunities there are around the world for intercultural communication, which is the field I am interested in.
What advice can you offer for CSB/SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?
DO IT! I don't think anyone on our program regretted their decision to attend. We all had ups and downs along the way but overall it was a life changing experience that you simply can't have in the United States.
