Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?

I saw study abroad as an opportunity to embrace change and learn new things. I knew I wanted to stretch myself out of my comfort zone. I wanted to climb mountains, eat amazing food, and experience something so new and beautiful. I wanted to come home having truly felt connected and a part of something so much bigger than myself. The Guatemala program gave me all of that and more.

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.

Learning Spanish one-on-one has given me the opportunity to think and connect differently and more creatively in every aspect of my life. The connections I made in Guatemala will stay with me forever.

Describe your overall study abroad experience.

Going to Guatemala has greatly changed every aspect of my life. So much so, that I plan to live abroad after graduation and continue what I have learned aboard. Overall, going to Guatemala just might have been the best educational experience I have had yet, in and out of the classroom.

Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?

Studying abroad greatly improved my Spanish speaking abilities, my independence, and gave me a better sense of self. I found that I am capable of climbing mountains, crawling through caves, jumping off bridges, making connections from all over the world, learning something new everyday, and I now have a greater appreciation for all things this beautiful world has given me.

What advice can you offer for CSB/SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?

Do it. Simply make that choice. It's a personal investment in yourself that will benefit you in so many more ways than one.
