Alexander is an Ambassador who studied abroad in London

Major: Global Business Leadership

Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?

I chose to study abroad because I have known ever since I was a little kid that I wanted to travel the world and see everything that the world has to offer. I chose London because it was a large multicultural city and central hub in Europe that had easy access to transportation and it also had an internship program which provided an amazing experience and resume booster.

Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.

A cultural experience that I had while I was abroad was having the opportunity to go to four football matches. At these events I was able to talk with locals and supporters of the team and I was able to experience an atmosphere for a sporting event unlike any other in the world. Football is a huge part of the culture over in Europe and especially in England and to be lucky enough to have the opportunity to have as many experiences with it as I did was truly a blessing.

Describe your overall study abroad experience.

My study abroad experience was absolutely incredible. I can try to put it all into words but the truth is, it's impossible to describe it perfectly or in full to someone else. You have to live it yourself to truly experience it. Studying abroad was the best decision I have ever made in my life. I was able to visit 10 different countries in four months and I got to learn so much about the different cultures and about how European countries operate. It was an experience of a lifetime.

Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?

Studying abroad allowed me to develop y social skills because I was required to converse with members in my group who I did not know fully, but also because I met locals in different countries and learned about their country and their lives. You get to learn how foreign economies operate and you get to see the types of businesses there are in foreign countries. Interning abroad allowed me to not only get great work experience but it also allowed me to interact with coworkers and learn so much so quickly about differences between American employers and British employers. It set me up greatly for working back here in the United States and it also helped me learn how to adapt to different environments that I might not necessarily be comfortable in.

What advice can you offer for CSB/SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?

My advice would be this... Don't worry about the cost. Go out and do everything that you want to do. Because when you look back on your experiences, those are going to be the things you remember the most. You can't find out who you truly are if you have only ever been in the same place doing the same old thing. Studying abroad is the best experience I've ever had in my life and I promise it will be yours too.
