Turkish Entry into the European Union and the Austrian Memory of the Turkish Wars
Little Theater, Quad 346, SJU
For the last several years, the European Union andTurkey have been negotiating Turkish entry into the European Union. Although these discussions relate to current concerns about the political and economic situation in Turkey and the question of integrating “Muslim” Turkey into “Christian” Europe, there is at least one more layer from the perspective of Austria: the memory of the Turkish wars of the early modern era, when the Habsburg and Ottoman empires often clashed. In this presentation, I will discuss the legacy of the Habsburg-Ottoman wars within Austria itself and the ways in which the memory of the wars affects contemporary discussions of the European Union. Most of the materials for this presentation were collected in the fall 2004, when I directed the Austria Program and when the European Union and Turkey engaged in important negotiations.
