September 11 and its aftermath have made the western world more aware of the crusades. Some politicians and members of the media have even used the word “crusade” to describe America’s armed response to terrorist action. Theresa Vann, a historian of crusading movements, will describe the origins of the word crusade, its meaning to medieval Christians and Muslims, and the torturous attempts of modern historians to define crusades. While she is not an expert on current affairs, she can explain why the word “crusade” is both controversial and combative in the modern context.
