How to Apply for Need-Based Aid

 

To be consider for grants or loans, you must apply each year.  After January 1st, complete the following steps to apply for financial aid for the next academic year. 

Step 1 - Complete the FAFSA

Before completing the FAFSA, you may find it helpful to complete FAFSA on the Web Worksheet.

Complete the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

School code required in Section 5 of the FAFSA:

    • College of Saint Benedict:  002341
    • Saint John's University:     002379

Step 2 - Complete the CSB/SJU Financial Aid Application

Submit a CSB/SJU Financial Aid Application one of three ways:

  • A paper 2009-2010 CSB/SJU Financial Aid Application was mailed to the student's permanent address in January.  Mail or fax the completed and signed Application, along with a signed copy of student's and parent(s)' 2008 federal tax return and copy of student's and parent(s)' 2008 W-2s to the Financial Aid Office.

OR

  • Complete the online version of the 2009-2010 CSB/SJU Financial Aid Application (Network Login Required).  Mail or fax the printed and signed Certification page, along with a signed copy of student's and parent(s)' 2008 federal tax return and copy of student's and parent(s)' 2008 W-2s to the Financial Aid Office.

OR

  • Complete the fillable PDF version of the 2009-2010 CSB/SJU Financial Aid Application.  Mail or fax the printed and signed Application, along with a signed copy of student's and parent(s)' 2008 federal tax return and copy of student's and parent(s)' 2008 W-2s to the Financial Aid Office.

It is to your advantage to complete the FAFSA and the CSB/SJU Financial Aid Application prior to June 1, since some funds may no longer be available after that date.

Step 3 - Receive Award

Your financial aid award will be mailed to you in the summer. 

Award packets are sent to your permanent mailing address.  Remember to keep addresses updated with the Registrar’s Office.  The Financial Aid Office will send important notices to your CSB/SJU e-mail; please open and read these messages.

Step 4 - Apply for Loans

If you choose to take out a loan, follow the directions listed on the Loan Response Form for that specific loan.  The Loan Response Form is included with your financial aid award packet.  Details on the various loan types can be found on the Loan section of this website.  Be sure to turn in the Loan Response Form indicating which loans you plan to accept to the Financial Aid Office by the deadline listed on the form.

Eligibility Requirements

In order to be eligible for federal student assistance, the student must:
  • Be a citizen or eligible non-citizen of the United States with a valid Social Security #.
  • Be classified as degree-seeking and enrolled at least half-time.
  • Not owe a refund on a federal student grant or be in default on a federal student loan.
  • Meet Satisfactory Academic Progress standards.
  • Be registered with the Selective Service (male students born after December 31, 1959, who are at least 18 years of age.

Special Circumstances

If you, or your family, experience a substantial change in income due to death, disability, unemployment, divorce, or similar circumstances, you are encouraged to contact the Financial Aid Office.  In some cases, upon submission of supporting documentation, your financial aid eligibility may be adjusted.
