Jo Morrissey

After graduating from CSB with a BA in Psychology in 2001, Jo Morrissey completed her MS in Sport and Exercise Psychology, with a minor in Counseling Psychology, at Ball State University (Muncie, IN; 2005-2007).  While at Ball State, she worked as both a research and teaching assistant. Jo took several graduate level classes in the Psychology Department and applied these skills by seeing clients in the counseling clinic at Ball State. While at Ball State, she realized she wanted to teach in the university setting so she continued her education at The University of Iowa to earn a PhD in Health and Sport Studies, with an emphasis in Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity.  During her 5 years at Iowa, she worked as a research and teaching assistant for the Department of Health and Human Physiology. Jo also taught a variety of classes for the department, including: Psychological Aspects of Sport and Physical Activity; Physical Activity and Health; and Stress Management. After earning her PhD in May 2012, she was hired as an Assistant Professor in the Kinesiology Department at California State University-Monterey Bay (CSUMB) in August 2012.  She teaches a variety of classes within the Wellness Concentration, including: Theories of Health Behavior Change; Sport and Exercise Psychology; Stress Management; Service Learning for Kinesiology Majors; and Capstone.

In November 2013, she became a CC-AASP (Certified Consultant for the Association for Applied Sport Psychology) which means she can begin consulting with athletes and exercise participants independently and develop her own private practice.  In the near future, she hopes to consult with high school, collegiate, elite, professional, and recreational athletes and also with the 'average joe and jane' participating in physical activity.  As 1 of 464 CC-AASPs worldwide, she is interested in consulting with individuals to determine how participation in sport, exercise, and physical activity may enhance personal development and well-being throughout their life span.

After taking Dr. Stelzner's Sport Psychology course at CSB, Jo knew she wanted to pursue an education and career related to sport and exercise psychology!
