National Scholarships and Faculty Contacts

If you are interested in pursuing a national scholarship for which a faculty contact is not designated, you may wish to contact James Read, Charles Bobertz, or our academic deans for a referral.


The Truman Scholarship:

A $30,000 scholarship for students who plan to make a career in public service.  Awarded to 80 students nationally every year. Applications due late January of junior year of college.

The Rhodes Scholarship:
Pays for two years of study at Oxford University in England.  It is designed for well-rounded individuals who combine academic excellence with leadership qualities.  Apply in senior year of college or soon after graduation.  Applications due in October.

The Marshall Scholarship:
Pays for two years of study at any British University. Apply in senior year of college or soon after graduation.  Applications due in October.

The Davies-Jackson Scholarship:
A two-year scholarship for a B.A. degree at St. John’s College, Cambridge, England.  Includes full tuition, room and board, and a travel grant.  Intended for college seniors.  Apply from Labor Day through December 1.

The Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship:

Pays for graduate study leading to a Ph.D in some field of the Humanities.  Apply in senior year.  Applications due late December.

Jacob K. Javits Fellowship:
Pays for graduate study leading to a Ph.D or Master of Fine Arts in the arts, humanities, or social sciences.  Apply in senior year or soon after graduation.  Applications due in February.



The Morris K. Udall Scholarship:
A $5000 scholarship for students who plan careers related to environmental policy.  Apply in sophomore or junior year of college.  Applications due early December.

The Fulbright Grant Program:
Pays for overseas study in more than 100 nations. Applications due in September.  Apply in senior year or soon after graduation.

The Rotary Ambassadorial Fellowship:

Sponsored by the Rotary Foundation. Pays one year of study in one of more than 150 nations.  Application dates vary depending on local Rotary club.

The Goldwater Scholarship:
Pays $7000 for students majoring in mathematics, engineering, or natural sciences.  Apply in sophomore or junior year of college. Applications due mid-January.

The James Madison Fellowship:
Pays for two years of graduate study for future secondary school teachers of American history, American government, and social studies.  Apply in senior year of college.  Applications due March 1.

National Science Foundation Fellowships:

Pays for one year of graduate study in science, mathematics, or engineering.  Apply in senior year or soon after graduation.  Applications due early November.



Public Policy and International Affairs Fellowship:

Pays for graduate study directed toward Master’s Degree in public policy and international affairs. Applicants must be members of groups historically under-represented in public policy and international affairs, including African Americans, Asian Americans, Native Americans, Hispanics, Pacific Islanders, or Alaska Natives.
