Curriculum Changes

The department has recently revised its curriculum to reflect changes in the ways we read and think about literature. In the past, English meant English and American literature exclusively. Today, most scholars agree that English literature includes literature written in English, including post-Colonial works from India, Africa and the Caribbean.

Moreover, the literary canon—the body of literature studied at the university level—has been widened to include work by women and persons of color. The revised curriculum integrates into its courses an awareness of the diversity of literary traditions and the excellence of writers in English.

Curriculum...

English majors can choose one of two concentrations: the literature concentration, appropriate for most liberal arts and pre-professional students, or the English-language arts concentration, designed for those students who plan to teach. There are specific course requirements for both; but in either case, you will work closely with your adviser to develop a program of study that takes into account your interests and career goals.

We also offer a minor in both Literary Studies and in Writing at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University.

Please use the links at the left to find specific information on the various courses and curriculum for each option.
