Recent SJU graduates earn fellowships:

Brandon Drazich and Nik Nadeau, recent graduates of SJU, have received Upper Midwest Human Rights Fellowships from the University of Minnesota.  For more information, visit the Human Rights Fellowships website.



According to an article in the St. Paul Pioneer Press, Yuko Taniguchi, CSB '98, was nominated for the Dayton Literary Peace Prize.

  • Faculty member Steven Thomas published "The New James Bond and Globalization Theory, Inside and Out" in issue 78 (2009) of the film journal CineAction.
  • July 1st, 2009, faculty member Cynthia Malone, Ph.D. became Chair of the CSB/SJU English Dept.
  • Three English alumni featured in SC Times.
  • Senior Melissa Hendrickx won this year's Wagner-Berger Prize for her story "Culinary Therapy" in the Spring 2009 edition of Studio One.

  • Making "Young Hamlet"  by faculty member Matthew Harkins was published in the Spring 2009 issue of Studies in English Literature 1500-1900.

Program highlights

  • English majors regularly intern at Graywolf Press and other companies where they use their reading, writing and editing skills every day. 
  • Faculty members who are engaged and productive in their fields.
  • Through the CSB Literary Arts Institute, English majors learn what it means to be a working author by taking classes from visiting writers throughout the year.

Overview of Program

  • Curriculum to include all literature written in English—e.g. works from India, Africa and the Caribbean
  • Expanded investigation into more literature by people of color and women.
  • Two concentrations: Literature and English-language arts.
