Why Write Here?

The College of Saint Benedict/Saint John's University was founded on the importance of the book and the written word: the book creates community. Programs across our contemporary campuses, including our Books Arts Minor, continue to re-imagine roles and forms of the book and the written word - offering students a wealth of opportunities to design books, broadsides, documentaries, and more.

Our close relationship to the book has drawn many literary figures to our campuses, sparking dialogues that ultimately led to the founding of our Literary Arts Institute: a world class center for the support and promotion of literary activity within the US and around the world. English faculty including American novelists JF Powers and Jon Hassler strenthened our ties to creative writing and secured its central place within our major. Through our partnership with the Literary Arts Institute, we offer students a wealth of literary experiences. Our students have had internships at Graywolf, Milkweed, and the Liturgical Press. We provide opportunities each year for students to work closely with visiting writers through workshops, readings and even conversations over coffee.
