English Major with a Concentration in Creative Writing

Creative Writing Concentration Requirements (44 credits)

Our Concentration in Creative Writing offers students a combined degree in English and Creative Writing. Featuring craft talks and workshops with local, national, and international writers through our Literary Arts Institute, our campuses provide an inspiring location for writing and exploration with faculty and students from around the world.

Exploration is integral to good writing, and the best writers are avid and rigorous readers. Our major therefore places writing practice within the study of literature and the literary arts, encouraging artistic inquiry through courses in literature, film, theory, and cultural studies. Our majors deepen their understanding of the value and importance of creative writing through service and internship opportunities. Our Presidential Award-winning Experiential Learning course trains students to bring creative writing into area elementary schools.

Our new Medical Humanities course, "Clinical Encounters," takes pre-health students from the classroom to the clinic--giving them vital clinical experiences and helping our community re-think the reach of creative writing.

Leah Wakefield, '18

Deciding to be an English major was simple for me given my love of the English language, reading, and writing, but I did not realize what a profound effect this choice would have on my education. As an English major, I have learned to think critically and analyze texts from many different points of view. Working with the English language has allowed me to develop both my oral and written skills. Adding the creative writing concentration has allowed me to stretch my imagination, and express my wildest thoughts in concrete and exciting language.
