English Major with a Concentration in Creative Writing

Creative Writing Concentration Requirements (44 credits)

Our Concentration in Creative Writing offers students a combined degree in English and Creative Writing. Featuring craft talks and workshops with local, national, and international writers through our Literary Arts Institute, our campuses provide an inspiring location for writing and exploration with faculty and students from around the world.

Exploration is integral to good writing, and the best writers are avid and rigorous readers. Our major therefore places writing practice within the study of literature and the literary arts, encouraging artistic inquiry through courses in literature, film, theory, and cultural studies. Our majors deepen their understanding of the value and importance of creative writing through service and internship opportunities. Our Presidential Award-winning Experiential Learning course trains students to bring creative writing into area elementary schools.

Our new Medical Humanities course, "Clinical Encounters," takes pre-health students from the classroom to the clinic--giving them vital clinical experiences and helping our community re-think the reach of creative writing.

Anna R. Garrison, '19

As I was growing up I loved reading. And the older I got the more obvious it was to me that I would always love to read, so deciding to be an English Major was very simple. Because of my major I have developed skills in analyzing texts, writing, and even communicating with others. When I decided to add the creative writing concentration it was appealing to me because it would allow me to be more creative and to let me use my imagination more and in new ways.
