English Department Thesis Policies

Policies for HONR 398 and ENGL 398:

Proposals for Fall theses should be submitted to the English Department by April 1.

A thesis proposal should provide more than a simple topic; it should give a sense of the key questions or problems the thesis will address, and how it will address them. The proposal should also include a substantial working bibliography.

A thesis proposal must be approved by the director before it is submitted to the department.

The director of the thesis must be a member of the English faculty.

Each faculty member should direct no more than one thesis per academic year.

Thesis projects cannot double-count for more than one major.

A student who chooses to write poetry, fiction, or creative nonfiction for the thesis must have completed a course in the genre of the proposed thesis.

A student who chooses to write poetry, fiction, or creative nonfiction for the thesis must also complete a critical essay. In this essay, the student describes the research that informs the project and outlines the process of developing the project. The critical essay must document sources and include a list of works cited.

Students writing theses in English must turn in a full draft of the thesis to the director by Thanksgiving. (The Honors Program requires the director to submit a progress report at Thanksgiving).

If the committee judges the work produced in the fall semester to be inadequate, the director should meet with the student and change the project to an ILP.
