Amy Vander Heiden

Amy Vander Heiden 2012

I am currently teaching Grade 10 and 11 English in Melrose, MN. I also became the head coach of the Speech team this year, so I'm reading, planning, graading, speaking, acting, coaching... Hmmm...how has my English major contributed to my life? Well, I teach everything I learned in college. I'm even more obsessed with Shakespeare than I was before, and I find opportunities to continue to see productions whenever I can. This past weekend, I went to Othello at the guthrie (just okay), and over the summer, I saw Hamlet in Spring Green, WI (phenomenal). My exploration of Jane Austen, which grew in college, has continued to flourish, too; I became a member of the Jane Austen Society of North America (who knew we had one??) and attended their Annual General Meeting this past fall in Minneapolis. We drank tea, dressed in Regency apparel, and danced. In addition to instilling certain passions, the English courses simply taught me to challenge things -- to ask why, to see the under- or unrepresented view, and to question.
