Who Are We?
We are an organization on campus sponsored by the Saint John's University/College of Saint Benedict's English Department. The Literary Arts Society (L.A.S.) is an umbrella organization that sponsors the Print to Motion Picture Book club, literary themed chapel walks, book drives, The L.A.S. Little Free Library, The Humanities Alumni Mentorship Program, and many other events and suborganizations intended to provide the Saint Ben's and Saint John's community with spectacular, non-traditional, exploratory, and professional opportunities to experience the literary arts in all its forms outside of a classroom setting. This is the second year of this particular Literary Arts Society's existence, but many similar groups have graced the CSB/SJU campuses over the years. The current Literary Arts Society follows in the footsteps of previous literary arts societies dating back to the 1980s.
What Do We Do?
We plan a variety of events catering to diverse forms of literary art such as graphic novels, movie scripts, handmade book art, etc. in addition to providing pre-professional and preparatory seminars such as how to submit writing to publishers/agents, what to do between undergraduate and graduate school, and how to select writing samples for applications, to name a few. This organization allows students and professors to go beyond the scope of the classroom in their exploration of the world of literature and literary art.
