An intense pre-orientation service experience sponsored by the Service-Learning Program at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University.

BEGIN in Service 2005: August 22nd - August 26th, 2005

BEGIN in Service offers you opportunity to promote social change in the Twin Cities. Learn about and experience different lifestyles through direct service, dynamic speakers and colorful discussions. You will be amazed at how much you learn about your beliefs and values through the people you meet and experiences you will have.

BEGIN in Service is based at Afton State Park on the St. Croix River, just east of the Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area. This park offers extensive hiking trails and riverside swimming as well as scenic group camping stops. Live the rugged way out in the wilderness--campfires, diverse foods, tents and great CSB/SJU company (unlike the scary movie, we will have a map and a forest ranger to look out for us).

Serve and Grow...
Service is good. You'll be exposed to a multitude of different service opportunities, whether you're building your muscles with Habitat for Humanity, learning how to cook for up to 400 people with Sharing and Caring Hands, or spending a day working on an organic farm.  Learn why service work is a part of our society and how it relates to politics, social change, and our individual actions.

Listen and Make Connections...
Through your service work and speakers, you will be introduced to fascinating insights from homeless individuals, community organizers and CSB/SJU professors. You will also get to hear from your new friends at camp. Learn where they are from, what their interests are and where they are living--make these connections before you get to college!

Lead - Set Goals - Challenge Boundaries...
You'll have opportunities to set your own goals and challenge your own boundaries. Scale a rock-climbing wall, experience a high rope course and work as a team to accomplish many other tasks.

Transition into College...
Learn about CSB and SJU from the people who know what it's like. Your leaders are dynamic CSB/SJU students coming from a wide variety of majors and interests. You can talk to them about anything from living arrangements to sports to classes or find out where the best place to get cheap pizza is--they know about discounts!
